At the close of the service -at All Saints' Anglican Church, Ponsonby, Auckland, on Sunday evening, the contemplated action of the Minister for Education (the Hon. P. Fraser) to remove from primary school committees the authority under which they permit daily religious exercises was brought before the congregation by Canon W. W. Averill and a resolution protesting at such action was carried unanimously. At least 15 guide lamps have disappeared recently from the several sites of road reconstruction work on the main highway between Hawera and New Plymouth, those responsible showing a complete lack of consideration for the safety of- traffic. In spite of vigilance on the part of departmental officers, no trace of the lamps or the culprits has been found. The loss of the lamps was bad enough in itself, said Mr F. W. Lindup, district engineer, when the matter was referred to him, but even worse was the danger that confronted motorists who had to use the roads at night. Without the aid of the guiding lights many might find the passages through the works extremely difficult.
