MILK-IN SCHOOLS

SCHEME

START WILL BE MADE

ON MAY 24

SUPPLY FOR ALL PUPILS

IN A YEAR

The milk-in-schools scheme will come into operation on May 24 on the West Coast. This was the decision reached at a meeting of the Greymouth Mlik-in-Schools Committee, at which Messrs W. A. Cowell. milk scheme officer for the Department of Health. Wellington, and J. Harris, manager of United Dairies. Christchurch attended to outline the proposals of the department for the supply of milk from Christchurch. Mr A. H. McKane preSl At i; the outset of the scheme, said Mr McKane. the Greymouth, Hokitika, Runanga, Cobden. and Blaketown Schools would be supplied, and within a year it was hoped to supply all the schools on the West Coast. More than 157.000 children were being supplied in all parts of New Zealand, said Mr Cowell. For Hokitika. Greymouth, and Runanga the daily supply would amount to 120 gallons. r.nd would be free to the children. There was no possibility of contamination, as the crates containing the half-pint bottles of milk would be placed in boxes on the outside of the schools and were taken out only when inside the buildings. Fresh, pasteurised milk would be supplied, the only safe milk, from clean herds. The milk would leave Christchurch in an insulated -truck at 6 p.m. and arrive on the West' Coast at 4 a.m. next day for delivery that day. Straws would be "iven to every child. Other than the cost of boxes, there was no expense to be met by the school committees. Tenders had been invited, but -local duopliers'were not interested, so' the milk would have to come from Christchurch. Schools at Reefton, Blnckwatcr, Waiuta, Ahaura. Ngahere. Kokiri, Kotuku, and Rotomanu. said Mr McKane, had not replied to circulars sent about particioating in the rcheme. At Rotokohu the pupils were all children of farmers and did not require the supply. When all schools did participate, more than 4000 children from Reefton to Ross would receive the milk.

PERIOD OF OFFICE REVIEWED

THE INANGAHUA COUNTY

COUNCIL

Mr F. W. Archer, the chairman, presided at the monthly meeting of the Inangahua County Council, and reviewed the work of the council during the last three years. In that time the affairs of the county had been successfully conducted without recourse to borrowing, the chairman said. Rates had not been unduly high and ratepayers were not penalised by having heavy financial calls on them. Changes had been made in the number of roads under the direct control of the council. Financially the county was in a sound position. In 1935 the overdraft was £593. This had in 1938 increased to £2996, but this was offset by plant valued at £2757. having been added to the equipment of the county in the period. As the recent floods had done much damage in various districts it was resplved that the engineer prepare estimates of the amount necessary to repair the damage and submit them to the Public Works Department so as to ask grants for repairs, and that the matter of erosion in Lower Broadway, Reefton, be treated as urgent.
