TO-DAY'S SPORTS

MOST GAMES POSTPONED

TROTTING MEETING TO BE HELD ON WEDNESDAY

Because of the sodden state of grounds most sports fixtures set down tor to-day have been postponed. The New Zealand Trotting Club's meeting, which was to have been concluded to-day. has been postponed to Wednesday. The Canterbury Rugby Union has decided not to play any matches to-day in view of the death of Mr S. F. Wilson, a former president of the union. Women's hockey, basketball, Association football, and lower grade men's hockey matches have been postponed, and a decision will be made this morning whether senior men's hockey will be played. As the City Council reserves department has decided to close the grounds under its control to-day no Rugby League matches will take place. For the opening round of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association's winter inter-club competition for the Hawkins Shield, the matches at Wilding Park to-day will be between Avonside and North Beach. Linwood and Canterbury College, and Edgeware and Addington, Edgeware B having the bye. A number of city golfers will travel to Rangiora for the Rangiora Club's annual tournament over the week-end. Most city clubs will hold competitions for their own members.

Cross-country runners will again take part in club runs.

SPORTS AT ASHBURTON

PROBABLE POSTPONEMENT OF

FIXTURES

Owing to heavy rain at Ashburton during the last few days it is probable that all sports fixtures during the week-end will be postponed. No Rugby football matches will be played on the oval. To avoid any undue damage to the oval while it is wet, the matches between Technical Old Boys and Springburn, Old Boys and Hinds, and Allenton and Celtic will be played on the top grounds at the Ashburton Domain. It is proposed to hold the junior match between Old Boys and Eiffelton at Eiffelton. The golf matches at Ashburton have been postponed and it is probable that matches in both the men's and women's hockey competitions will not be held. The friendly basketball matches arranged for to-day will not be held if the grounds are unsuitable for play at 11 a.m. to-day. The Ashburton Men's Hockey SubAssociation's competitions, which were to have opened to-day, have been postponed. .
