FAREWELL TO VICAR

SOUTHBRIDGE PAROCHIAL

DISTRICT

Parishioners from all parts of the Southbridge parochial district assembled at the parish hall to bid farewell to the Rev. and Mrs C. L. Wilson and family. Mr Wilson has been appointed vicar of Philipstown. Mr R. B. Willis, warden, presided. Mrs Wilson was presented with a bouquet by Margaret Willis. Tributes to the work of Mr Wilson were paid by the chairman and Messrs A. J. McLaughlin (Dunsandel), H. J. Greenwood (Southbridge), H. R. McLaughlin (Sedgemere), and the Rev. R. R. Adair (Presbyterian Church). The chairman presented a wallet and cheque to Mr Wilson. A prayer book was presented to Master Harold Wilson. From the Mothers' Union Mrs A. G. Thompson handed a toilet set tP Mrs Wilson, and from the Sunday school teachers and children Mr Willis presented her with a gift. Another gift to Mrs Wilson was from the Young People's Club.

SOUTHBRIDGE CHURCH FAIR

Stall-holders dressed to represent various countries and stalls decorated appropriately formed a feature of an all nations' fair held at the Town Hall, Southbridge, on Thursday to aid the funds of the Presbyterian Church. A remarkably fine collection of goods was displayed. There was a large attendance and business was brisk.

The fair was officially opened by the Rev. R. R. Adair. At the conclusion an auction sale was conducted by Mr J. Rigby.

GREAT IMPROVEMENTS TO DOMAIN

Great improvements have been made to the domain, which is now adequately drained. Part was levelled for cricket pitches and a tennis court is being formed, said the report at the annual meeting of the Hillsborough Domain Board.

The secretary (Mr O. E. Duncan), who has relinquished that position after eight years' service, was accorded a vote of appreciation and thanks. The appointment of Mr J. T. McHarg as secretary was confirmed.

BASKETBALL AT CHEVIOT

Mr T. E. Elliott presided at the annual meeting of the basketball club. The balance-sheet showed the club to be in a sound financial position. The election of officers ..resulted:— Patrons, Mrs G. W. CULVERDEN

The annual report of the Culverden School Committee presented at the biennial meeting of the householders, when Mr J. W. Black presided, said that the last two years had been most successful. The committee had concentrated, on the erection of a new master's residence, which had been sanctioned, and the building had been completed shortly after Christmas. Extensive improvements had been carried out to the grounds.

There was a credit balance of £4B 12s sd, compared with £3l 4s 4d. It was moved by Mr H. M. Searle and seconded by Mr H. Ingram that a letter be written to Mr P. Hadley expressing this meeting's appreciation for his handsome gift of a new radio to the school.

The following committee was elected: —Mrs P. Hadley, Messrs H. M. Searle, G. Mockett. J. W. Black, H. C. Croft At a committee meeting held later, Mr J. W. Black was re-elected chairman, and Mr H. C. Croft secretary and treasurer.

PERSONAL NOTES

RANGIORA

Miss Nancy Buckley is spending the week-end with her mother, Mrs A. O. Buckley. King street. Mr Vincent Lynskey, who has been visiting his mother at Rangiora, has returned to Wellington.

WEST MELTON

Mr R. Archie, who has been spending a short holiday at West Melton, returned to Timaru at the beginning of the week.

Dr. Baker McLaglan and Nurse E. Spring visited the local school and carried out an examination of the pupils.

KAIKOURA PERSONAL

The Bishop of Polynesia visited Kaikoura on Thursday and gave a lantern address in St Peter's Church schoolroom on the church and social and spiritual work in the Islands. The Bishop was the guest of Mr and Mrs J. C. Smith.

AKAROA

Mrs Malcolmson (Southbridge), sister of Mr A. R. Munro, Beach road, Akaroa, is staying with Mr and Mrs J. C. Munro.

Miss Wainona Pool, Akaroa, left on Thursday for Wellington. Mrs A. French, "The Vineries," Burwood, has been visiting Akaroa. Mr S. W. Hayward, Dunedin, has been visiting Akaroa.

CHEVIOT

The Rev. F. Bush and family have left for Picton, where Mr Bush will be Anglican minister.

HAWARDEN

Mrs Crane (Hawarden) is visiting her daughter, Mrs A. Morrison, Clande°Mr and Mrs A. Anderson and Miss M Anderson (Wellington) are the guests of Mrs J. B. Drake (Clandeboye).

MAGISTRATE'S COURT

THEFT OF CORNET AT

KAIKOURA

At the Magistrate's Court at Kaikoura, before Messrs Jas. Davidson and Jas. Boyd, Justices of the Peace, Martin William Starkey. aged 20, a cook, was charged with the theft of a cornet, valued at £lO, the property of James Moore, at Kaikoura, on November 21. 1937. _,. , . .. The case had been adjourned at the sitting of the Court on April 13. Defendant was fined £7 10s and ordered to pay costs in default two months imprisonment. Mr Davidson for the Bench said that offences of this nature were looked on as serious.

RETURNED SOLDIERS AT

KAIKOURA

The annual reunion of the Kaikoura returned soldiers was held in the Band Room recently. Dr. R. L. Withers presided. Among those present were the Rev. Father Devlin, Rev. S. Corney, and visitors from Oaro. Puketa and Aniseed Camp. A long toast-list was honoured. Musical items were given by Messrs L. Firkin, J. McMullan; instrumental items bly Messrs F. S. H. Warner (Diano), J. Dick ('cello), T. A. Cloudesley (violin), J. McMullan (banjo).

FRENCH SLOOP TO VISIT AKAROA

The Mayor of Akaroa (Mr F. R. E. Davis) has been notified that a French war sloop, Rignault de Genouilly, under the command of Captain Plante, will visit Akaroa on Monday, May 30, leaving the next day for Dunedin.

The annual meeting of the Hororata branch of the New Zealand Farmers Union was held in the Hororate HaU recently. Mr K. W. J. Hall presided. Mrs R. Barnctt presided at the eighth annual meeting of the Dunsandel subbranch of the Plunket Society. Mrs Gilbert expressed appreciation of the satisfactory condition of the axfairs of the branch, and in moving the adoption of both reports, congratulated the branch on the success of its work.
