RACING AND TROTTING

DANNEVIRKE K.C.

PROGRAMME FOR TO-DAY

{THE PRESS Special Service.) WELLINGTON, April 28. • Large fields will parade at Woodtile to-morrow for the opening at the Dannevirke Racing Club’s annual meeting. As the result of the recent rains, the going is likely to be on the soft side. Betting will be on the single pool system. Arctic King may be able, to repeat his winning performance of last year In the Dannevirke Handicap. His Riccarton form stands out. in the field; but Sergia should run well. Might is not making the trip. The light-weights do not make. a great appeal, but Davistock was a creditable third to Lickem at Feilding. The following horses may be supported, in their engagements:— Mangatera Hurdles—Southern Blood and Taumau (or Hirangi>. Rakaiatai Maiden—Reay Bridge and [Waterproof. ■f Dannevirke Cup—Arctic King and Davistock. Makirikiri Juvenile—Footloose and [White Lady (or Hunter’s Eve). Akitio Hack—Shangri La and Otaki. EXPLANATION TO PUBLIC

(fbem aasMOanoa WELLINGTON, April 28. The following announcement has been made to the press by Mr J. R. McKenzie, owner of U. Scott:— “Owing to the erratic running of my horse. U. Scott. I feel I owe an explanation to the public who were so unfortunate .in backing him in the one and a half miles race on the sec-end-day.—My sympathies, are with. tnen> and if I were in their place I probably would have felt the same as they did U. Scott was left at the barrier at the start of the first day’s race and when he struck his hopples was about 72 yards behind the field, a hopeless position from,, which-., to win a race.’ Yet bis driver sent him after the field and he showed a Wonderful burst of speed to catch ■ the field, though he was then unable to finish -on in the straight. “Naturally the public, alter this performance. selected>him. to win at.his second start.: Owing to ah injury* we were unable to .work U. “On the second day Free Holmes. Sy driver, tucked U. Scott in behind lotfaer horse. U. Scott pulled so hard that H wgs necessary for Holmes to lie back to hold him. and be had difficulty in keeping him off the sulky in .front .of him. He took the first opportunity of getting- offf and letting j U. Scott go to the front, but although in front the home still continued to pull as be .could see the field behind him. The horse had partly choked himself through his pulling tactics and although the. driver used the whip going .up tbd straight the horse was un#b axe with njy driver who had a difficult horae to drive on’ the day, and I am aure that he-dld what he: considered wquM. give him the best-' chance of winning. My trainer and I discussed this horse for an how after W» poor showing on the second Vday. and decided that we would run him In a .closed bridle on the next; occasion, one reason being so that he would not see the field chasing him. We also suggested to the driver thati he should let him run two or three lengths in front Of the field so he would not hear the other horse*. U.‘ Scott will be driven In the final in a closed bridle, the same as was used when. he. wop...the two miles event. I am df the opinion that now that: this horse-has. had three races into-him he. will probably go a more generous race-in the Qnal and may the best horse win.”

INTER-DOMINION TROTTING

THE GRAND FINAL

TO-MORROW’S PROGRAMME

PROSPECTS DISCUSSED

The racing at Addington to-morrow will bring to a conclusion the test between the greatest pacers in the Southern Hemisphere, and though the wdather during the last few days has been more in keeping with winter than autumn, there now appears some prospect, of a good break In the weather, and a fine day to-morrow. The Championship has revealed some great pacers, and all will meet in the supreme test in the Grand Final, run over a mile and five furlongs.

The outstanding pacers ,h;ve been Lucky Jack, Parisienne, Supertax, and U, Scott, and even with only this quartet engaged, the race would be one worthy of the occasion.' All that fs needed is a good atmosphere and a fast track, and spectators will be treated to one of the greatest exhibitions of pacing ever witnessed on a Canterbury racecourse. For horses that competed in the qualifying events of the championship and were not selected for the Grand Final, there are consolation races, and these events will be no less exciting than the Grand Final. The two races find the class very evenly divided, and they may provide the best betting races on the programme. The win and place system of betting •will be in operation, and as the totalisator equipment will be taxed to the limit, Investors are advised to make their beta aa soon as possible after the machine has opened. The programme Is as follows: H.J2 ajß/ OTAGO HANDICAP. Unhoppled trotters. 3mln 34sec class. One mile and a half • ’ ' . Guy Hugo .. scr Survivor .. scr Honeymoon scr Parrish Guide 12 lildOuint ’ .. scr Lady Sonoma - 24 Llatowfel , scr Slater Mary 24 Prince Pilot Peter .. 36 Harvester scr Kippagh .. 48 Reward .. scr Aristotle I. 84

When Parrish Guide broke up at the start of the Mascot Handicap, tojinish second to Aristotle, he lost all chance of victory, but he will be afforded another opportunity in the Otago Handicap to-morrow. He will concede only 12 yards to tho limit horses, and with his stable-mate, Lady Soffoma, he will make a brave showing. Pilot Peter has made grievous mistakes; but on his day he is capable of great speed. On a good track, Prince Harvester and SUrvivor may be the next. Form points to the chances of Parrish Guide. Pilot'Pteter, and Prince Harvester. 11.12 p.m.— WESTLAND HANDICAP. 2mln 31 sec class. One mile'and a quarter. Bing Crosby scr Sky Wink .. scr Fremont ... scr Starwyn .. scr Heather Queen scr Twenty Grand scr Ivy Peterson scr Vologda .. scr Lone Derby .. scr. Whippet .. scr Moana Tama * scr Red Ranger 12 Our Peggy .. scr Silver Guy .. 12 Racketeer .. scr Zincali ..24 Red Flyer .. scr Aircraft .. 36 Repeal .. scr Morewa .. 36 Sage King .. scr-

The draw for barrier positions will pipy a big. part in the decision of the Westland Handicap, for mere than three-quarters of the field will start off the limit, Bing Crosby has shown extreme speed in his engagements, but, like Fremont and Ivy Peterson, has failed rather badly, and Lone Derby bps shown little form. Vologda was well supported on Tuesday, and may do better this time, arid Twenty Grand has form to' recommend his chances. Morewa is set to give away 36 yards, but with luck in the running she will be on hand. Silver Guy is also a possibility, and the finish may be confided to Twenty Grand, Vologda, and Repeal. . 12.57 p.m.— CANTERBURY HANDICAP. 4mln 32sec class. Two -miles. Elvo .. scr Ironside .. 24 . Frisco- Lady scr Lady Fame .. 24 Navy Blue .. scr Southern Smile 24 Iraq .. 12 Renown’s Best 48 Ginger Jack 24 :t Ginger Jack has already won two races at the meeting, and, while he failed on Tuesday, he may be much harder to beat in to-morrow’s race. Ironside, too, gave promise of better things to come, and he will be considered, while Renown’s Best should come up fresh and well for the fray. Navy Blue is a solid little pacer, and Iraq will hang/on for two-miles, with the race run to kuit him. The field is small; but the race is open, and speculators: may favour the. chances of Ironside, Renown's Best, and Ginger Jack. 1.42 p.m.— AUCKLAND HANDICAP. Uhhoppled trotters. '4mln 36sec class. Two miles. > •; Aristotle scr Norman Fox .. scr Bittersweet .. scr Writer ..scr Captain Bolt scr King’s Guard 12 Discord .. scr Wabnooka .. 12 Golden Eagle scr Waikato Prince 24 Great Admiral scr Sea Gift „ ..*9O

The C. S. Donald bracket. Wahnooka and Captain Bolt 'should -be a- firm favourite for the Auckland Handicap, lor Waikato Prince, who usually would be favourite, has failed rather dismally in his last twp start?. Sea,, Gift, on 90 yards, appears too. far back, and the order at the finish should be'Donald’s elect and Great Admiral.

TURF GOSSIP

Reminders Nominations for the Ashburton County Racing Club’s meeting are due .on Monday, belium Found Dead Delium suffered an inward haemorrhage after sprinting half a mile at Reefton on Wednesday, and died during the night. A sixr-year-old gelding by Diacquenod from Degage, he always commanded speed, and won several short distance races, mostly on the West Coast, where his owner, Mr E. V, Jones, resides.

After Long Absence The Masquerader made a pleasing return to winning form at Reefton yesterday, and gave his part-owner and trainer. J.Tomkinson. his first sue l cess for some months. The Masquerader figured as a winner of the Great Easter Handicap in 1934, but had to be put aside shortly afterwards because of unsoundness, and he was out of commission for more than two years. A Disappointment

Monipere was confidently supported to win at Reefton yesterday, but failed on the turns, and narrowly missed a fall early, which seemed to unbalance him for the remainder of the journey. Copyist Unlucky Silver Lark recorded her first success for her present owner at Reefton yesterday. Horsemanship had much tc do with the result, as Copyist's rider took things too easily in the last few strides, and victory was snatched from him on the post.

Mounting Up Rabble has now won £435 in stakes and should soon be out of hack company and looks to have another easy task to-morrow. Rabble is to contest the principal event at Amberley next week, and although he will meet some good staying hacks, he should carry further distinction. Outsider Again

Bonnie Agnes, who paid the biggest dividend of the day at Reefton yesterday. is a half-sister by Nightmarch to Sweet Agnes. She was formerly trained by C. Emerson, and won a division of the Motukarara Juvenile Stakes, 12 months ago. paying a substantial dividend. ♦

A Pleasant Visit Mr W. Hosking, of Auckland, was a visitor to ' the Reefton meeting yesterday. to see his horses. Mungatoon and Gienacre. in action. This was his first trip to the West Coast. Lest Opportunity Great Memory should not have been beaten at Reefton yesterday. She was kept a long way from the leaders over {he first half of the journey, but even with a furlong to go she was still in a favourable position to win Her final run was too long delayed. Services Recalled

The Silver Ring-A. E. Ellis combination once more came into the limelight yesterday. Ellis rode him on the first day at Hokitika in February, but the gelding was unplaced. Ellis did not have the mounts on him in subsequent races at Motukarara and Trentham. where he also failed. Ellis agreed to ride Silver Ring at Reefton this week, with happy results. The horse’s previous success to that of yesterday was in the Australian Jockey Cltib Plate, at Randwick. 18 months ago. in which he was ridden by Ellis

SILVER RING RETURNS

[From Our Own Reporter.] GREYMOUTH, April 28. The Reefton Jockey Club was once again unfortunate In the weather for the opening day of its autumn meeting to-day. The morning broke fine, but a light drizzle set in about an hour before the first race, and this continued practically throughout the programme. NOTES ON THE RACING

. In the Last Stride Acceptable, favourite for the Flying Handicap, tried to win from end to end, but commenced to weaken after leading Copyist, Silver Lark, and Queen Linda into the straight. Copyist took charge less than a furlong from the post, and appeared to have an easy win In view until Silver Lark flashed up under punishment, and got up in the last stride to win by a head. Acceptable and Queen Linda were two lengths away, with. the remainder strung out. A Class. Hack The Rabble—Gasmask bracket carried most money in the Alexander Hack Handicap, and Rabble won. From the early stages he was followed by - Glenacre, Emmeline Girl, and Owlsgleam, and there was not much change for the remainder of the journey. Rabble drew right away in the run home, and won without any pressure from Emmeline Girl, who comfortably outstayed Glenacre. Gold Boy, Owlsgleam, and Clubman followed. - Progress Trot Four Square had a decisive victory In the Progress Trot. Lough Erne was the early leader, but Four Square took charge at the half mile, and led into the straight from Lough Erne, Super Jack, Kay Francis, and Colonel Wrack. Kay Francis made a determined effort in the run home, but had no chance with Four Square, who was slowing up at the post. Atarau Queen finished well into third place In front of Colonel Wrack and Tarn. Mungatoon’s Success Mungatoon had an easy task in the f bur-horSe Irving Memorial Handicap. He allowed Windward and Roy Bun to pilot him through the back stretch, and Into the straight, and pushing his way through between the two leaders, he had no difficulty m beating Windward. Roy Bun was a fair third, clear of Monlpere, who failed to handle the going. Big Dividend

Trot from the back mark. Tonloro rushed away to open up a big break from Par* l ' Tarn, and Jambo. The last-named led into the straight from Tonloro, Big Nelson, and Lady Ann. weu'from Jambof with I^Ann .and S£ perb close up. Tagua broke at the start. Never in Doubt

Silver Ring outclassed the weak opposition in the Au Revoir Handicap. Windward and Metel Bird carried on the runnine together from the start to the straight Entrance, where Metal Bird gave up, and Windward led into silver Ring and Silver Lark, Silver Ring foonwn last Windward and was oeirpd for a serious effort, fauver Lark who carried an 81b was a close third, in front of Metal Bird.

acceptances for TO-MORROW

Tbs'Stewards’ Hack handicap provided a mild surprise, in the defeat, of a staunch favourite. The Sandwichman and Bonnie Agnes raced abreast from the start, well in front of Glenacre, with another gap to Lady Middleham and Patuma, with Great Memory in last place. There was actually no change In the order until well into the straight, where The Sandwich* man retired, and Great Memory worked her way into second place after making a fast run on the outside of the whole held rounding the home turn. Bonnie Agnes, however, never showed any signs of surrendering her position, and won well by a length. Lady Middleham Just beat Glenacre for third money. The Sandwichman was next, with Patuma a long way in the rear. A Popular Victory The Masquerader justified his shortpriced favouritism for the First Highweight Handicap by an impressive but narrow win from the second choice. Potent. This pair disputed the lead over the last half mile, and fought out a close finish, the favourite hanging on to win by a head. Polistina was a fair third, clear of Contract and Hunting Bag. Four on End Big Nelson recorded his fourth successive victory when be won the Reefton

TROTTING NOTES

Reminders At noon on Monday a payment of £2 for the New Zealand Derby, to be decided at Addington in November, will fall due. Nominations for the two trotting events at the Ashburton County Racing Club’s meeting on May 14 are due o:i Monday.’ Championship Driven R B. Berry will drive Parisienne in thf Grand Final of the Inter-Dominion Championship and L. Frost will be behind Lucky Jack. Berry knows the

peculiarities of Parisienne. and as no one else has driven the filly he would find a change of drivers something of an experiment In the Inter-State Handicap at Ashburton Frost was behind Lucky Jpck and Berry was very well pleased with the way in which the chestnut was driven. Asked, as to whether either of his horses would handle the heavy going, Berry offered the opinion that a heavy track would not assist them. Both, however, were in capital order, and under ordinary conditions would put up great races.

American Pacers With the exception of U. Scott, who raced well once out of three starts, American-bred pacers at the meeting have cut a sorry figure, and Bing Crosby and Fremont will have to improve to pljy a prominent part in tomorrow’s racing. J. Fraser will parade another American in Slarwyn, ai.d while he may be a good pacer he has yet to prove it In public. Fraser has a big job in front of him to win a race with Starwyn, and in the Westland Handicap the New Zealand-bred contingent will be preferred. Not Reliable

Ivy Peterson is hardly reliable in any sort of race, and only the expert reinsmanship of Free Holmes has enabled her to perform with credit to herself or the sport. Ivy Peterson has proved expensive to her supporters, -hnd while she is engaged in the West-

land Handicap, recent form does Mt encourage speculation. j At Auckland With the very successful West Cass V. circuit concluded, Auckland taottißtfl enthusiasts will turn their attention the forthcoming meetings in the mkCKI ■ the first of which win be staged all Epsom to-morrow.
