RUGBY LEAGUE ON WEST COAST

TWO SENIOR SELECTORS APPOINTED

MEETING OF MANAGEMENT

COMMITTEE

Messrs N. Griffiths and J. Bcban were appointed senior selectors at a meeting of the management committee of the West Coast Rugby League, at Greymouth, .on Wednesday night. Mr J. Stokes presided. On the application of the Runanga Club. J. Aims was regraded from senior to junior. Recommendations will be forwarded to the New Zealand Rugby League in support of the application of the Kumara Jub for the reinstatement of P. Gilbert, E. Hollis, T. Walker, and J. Robinson. It was decided to advise the Inangahua League that the New Zealand Council had decided th/.t the West Coast v. Jtnangahua game should be played at Greymouth, and that the West Coast League had no authority to change the venue of the game to Reefton, as requested by the Inangahua League. NEW BOWLING CLUB ’ FORMEP

RETURNED SOLDIERS AT

WESTPORT

Permission was given the Westport branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association to form a new bowling club in Westport at a public meeting convened by the Mayor (Mr J. Kilkenny) when the necessity of having a second bowling green in the town was fully discussed.

A provisional committee, comprising six members of the Returned Soldiers' Association and six others from the meeting, was appointed. elected were Messrs R. McGregor, F. Beirne, G. G. M. Mitchell, D. G. Cunningham, P. Struthers, W. Borlase, E. Skilton, F. Morgan, and J. Watson. Mr T. Brown was appointed secretary, and Mr G. D. Campbell treasurer.

GOLF CLUB’S NEW

PAVILION

OFFICIAL OPENING AT WESTPORT

The official opening of the Westport Golf Club’s new pavilion, which cpst £IOOO, took place in conjunction with the opening of the season. Mr D'. J. Archer, Buller County Council chairman, who performed the opening ceremony, referred to the growth of golf in the district, and congratulated the club in providing such a fine pavilion. Speeches were also made by Messrs C. H. Schadick, J. C. Meldrum (president, Greymouth Golf Club), and D. H. Lovell (president, Westport Golf Club). The season was officially declared open when G. D. Campbell drove the first ball.

VALUATIONS AT BULLER

To allocate the levies on Buller local bodies by the Buller Hospital Board, the Valuation' Department has assessed the rateable capital of property in the Buller County as £1,018.322. and the Westport Borough as £565,580.

GREYMOUTH

Mr L. P. Harker left yesterday on his return to Hamilton. Mr L. J. Schmitt, general manager of the Tourist Department, arrived yesterday. Mr B. O. J. Bradley (Christchurch) arrived yesterday from Hokitika and

South Westland, en route to Westport and Nelson.

Mr G. T. Moss, accompanied by his daughter. Mrs W. D. Revington arrived yesterday from Christchurch, on a visit to his sons. Messrs C. and E. Moss.

HECTOR

Mrs Rattray, who has been spending a holiday at Ngakawau, has returned to Christchurch.

Mr and Mrs Austin, of Hector, are visiting Nelson. Miss Paterson, matron of the Buller Hospital, has returned from a holiday in Canterbury. Mrs J. Worgan, of Denniston, is visiting Christchurch. Mrs J. Rowarth is visiting relatives in Wellington. Misses Armstrong and Findlayson, of North Auckland, are the guests of Mr and Mrs A. D. Batt. Mr and Mrs Warren, of Takaka, are the guests of Mr and Mrs -H. Adams, Queen street. Mr and Mrs H. Lovell have returned from Christchurch.

HOCKEY AT GREYMOUTH

Hockey games arranged for Greymouth to-morrow are:—

Mawhera v. Wesley, at Recreation Ground, at 1.30 p.m. (referees, Messrs Newton and Butler); Cobdcn v. Te Rama, at Recreation Ground, at 2.45 p.m. (Messrs Smith and McDonnell). If a ground is available at Hokitika, Pacific will play Tahua, at 2.30 pin.
