BUSY THREE MONTHS AT LIBRARY
QUARTERLY REPORT ISSUED
The Canterbury Public Library has been very busy during the first three months of this year, according to the quarterly report of the librarian (Mr E. J. Bell). From the circulating department 44.680 volumes have been issued, an increase of 400 compared with the first quarter of 1937. To this department 500 new volumes have been added, many of them being expensive and important works of non-fiction. The reduced subscriptions which are now in force have steadily increased the membership. During the three months under review 1251 subscriptions have been received, an increase of 136 compared with the same period of last year. In the reference library more than 30,000 books were consulted, a substantial increase upon the figures for the first quarter of 1937. Close upon 200 useful volumes have been added to this department, and the provision of technical journals has given satisfaction to a very large number of readers. The, children's library has also had a busy period, and the issues for home reading have reached a total .of nearly 9000 volumes, a big increase on the 1837 figures.
