Reminders Final payments for the Great Easter and Great Autumn Handicaps, and the Champagne and Challenge Stakes, and acceptances lor the remaining events on the first day’s programme of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting will close at 5 p.m. tofor the Greymouth Jockey Club’s meeting to be held on Saturday next will close at 5 p.m. today. Answer to Correspondent

“Please Explain.”—You have palpably misread the paragraph, which clearly indicated that the filly started from the six furlong post, and after taking 31sec for the first two furlongs, sprinted home from the half-mile post in 47 4-ssec. Interesting Tnaele

The leading horsemen of the season, L. J. Ellis and C. G. Goulsbro. will tackle the Easter racing with Ellis, with 68 wins, holding an advantage ot four points. Both will have many good engagements at Easter. Goulsbro will be riding at Ellerslie and Ellis at Riverton on Saturday and at Riccarton next week. Flying South

After riding at Ellerslie on Saturday L. H. Clifford will travel by aeroplane to Christchurch on Sunday to fulfil riding engagement* on Lady Ina in the Great Easter Handicap and Dictate in the Great Autumn Handicap. A rider has not yet been secured for Dictate in the Great Easter. Track Work at Riccarton

The early morning work at Riccarton yesterday was delayed by fog and a bad light, but a good deal was done before the breakfast interval. The outside of the course oroper was again open, and most of the. galloping was done on it, but a few trainers made use of the plough and also of the No. o grass.

On Coone Proper Kinnoull was the first to work, and he galloped a mile in Imin 49 3-Ssec, the second hall in Msec. He looks exceptionally bright, and although short 61 racing, he has got through a solid preparation. Bebel Lard lollowed over the same ground in Imin 46sec, the second hall m 52 2-ssec, and his stable-mate Parakino, who has been off the scene lor some months, was given strong work over seven furlongs. , Studley Boyal also took Imin _46aec lor his mile, the second hall in Msec. He was under a good hold throughout, and could have recorded much better time. . The 'Wrecker shaped well In covering hall a mile In 49 2-ssec. This son of Shambles and Brayton has furnished into a solid gelding, and should win races later. . _ Dividend and Love Affair ran five furlongs in Imin 3sec, the last lour in 50 2-ssec. ... Spendthrift and Colonel Rouge did a half-mile task in 53 3-ssec. and Every Port beat Keen Sight in 51 3-5 see* Settlement was slightly in front of Ruling Star at the end ol the same distance in 49sec, and similar time was recorded by Delium, who finished In front ol Nolana. Smart Sprints The best hall-mile tasks were credited to Kilroba, who beat Romarm in 48sec, and to Night Hawk and Nigella In the same time. „ „ Pelmet and Spartan took 48 3-3 sec, and Financiere and Gillie 48 l-ssec, while Jolly Beggar showed his advanced condition by running home hall a mile in 50sec. Silver Sight and The Masouerader each took 53sec, Great Star 52 l-ssec, and Pucelle 51 Gay Parade let off with an easy five furlongs in Imin 6sec, and similar work was done by Phalanx. Defaulter and Glenacre strode oyer six furlongs in Imin 18 2-ssec, the last lour in 51 2-ssec. Maroha and Passenger covered the same ground in Imin 18sec, time that was equalled by Stealamarch and Gold Trek, and also by Bright Prospect and Golden Chest. Grampian and Plumage took Imm 3 4-ssec lor five furlongs, and Wine Card finished In front of Papey Note and Guilder In Imin 3sec, the last lour in 49 3-sseo. Attractive Trials

An interesting gallop was that of Dictate and Davolo, who, picked up by Comus at the half-mile, ran six furlongs in Imin 16 3-Ssec, the last four in 48 2-ssec. Dictate had his head in front of Davolo at the post, but the latter was going very comfortably over the last furlong. . Rabble, carrying a feather-weight, gave Haughty Winner a start commencing a similar task, and beat him home in Imin 16sec, the last four in 50 4-3 sec. Rabble is to fulfil his engagement in the Papanui Handicap on Monday; and later will race at Reefton and Nelson. In the event of Brunhild not coming south for the Great Easter Handicap, L. J. Ellis will probably ride Haughty Winner. • Happy Night and Nlghtcalm did useful work over seven furlong* m Imin 32 S-ssec, and Tom Cat and Drinkup recorded Imin 34sec. Over a Mile

Gasmask, Haulbowline, and Courtyard finished in’that order at the end of a mile in Imin 43 3-ssec, the second four in 52sec. ' ' ' Willie Win ran the same distance in Imin 42 2-ssec, taking 51 l-Bsec for each half. His work Was impressive, and there is no doubt he is in excellent order for next week’s racing. Flashlight attracted attention by covering a mile in Imin 43 3-“ sec, On the Plough Wild Chase and Paper Slipper were together throughout seven furlongs m Imin 30sec, both finishing sdhdly.

ELLERSLIE NOTES

SOME GOOD GALLOPS

(rSBSS ASSOCIATION TSUOBAIC.)

AUCKLAND, April I*.

Features of this morning’s semi-final gallops for the Auckland Racing Club’s autumn meeting were an attractive six furlongs by Stretto, and a mile by Knight of Australia, while Royal Appellant and Rereatu went particularly weU over seven furlongs. The course proper, on which poles were set out 50 feet from the rails, was available for fast work, and provided firstclass going. The No. 3 grass track and the tan were also in use. Kilonsa. after beginning slowly over a round, completed her task in 2mln 17 l-3sec. She Increased the pace over the last seven furlongs, which took Imln 34 1- She worked well, but was .not unduly bustled. Knight of Australia, with Bonny Belle to assist him over the last five furlongs, registered an attractive trial over a mile. He ran the first half In 52 2-ssec. and the full distance In Imln 44 3-ssec. This time has seldom been bettered. Bonny Belle completed her five furlongs in Imln 5 2Easter Favourite Stretto went particularly well over six furlongs, which she ran in Imln 17sec, the first three In 38 2-ssec. She Is to be ridden in the Easter Handicap by F. E. Baker, successful hurdle rider. Fleetwind and Aero King got to 'the end of five furlongs In Imln 4 2-Ssec. It was a good effort, and there was little between them at the finish. Surella reeled off half a mile in 50 3- This was also a smart gallop. Improving

Llangollen, after running her first halfmile In 51 2-ssec, had a bit In reserve at the end of seven furlongs In Imm 32 3-Ssec. She was showing sUgbt signs of soreness as a result of bruising a foot last week, but she Is improving and it is not likely to affect her. . In a similar task. Rereatu and Royal Appellant recorded Imln 31 4-ssec. They ran the first half-mile In 52 2-Ssec, and although Rereatu had an advantage at the finish. Royal Appellant was on the outside and had to cover extra ground. Jack Tar was going particularly well at the conclusion of six furlongs run In ■lmm 18 4-ssec, the last half-mile being covered In SSsec. GlenogU Gallops.

Shy and Glenogil were in front of Te Hal and Mai de Mer after traversing six furlongs in Imin 18 3-ssec. Te Hal appeared to have something In. reserve. Sir Abb was given useful work on the No. 3 grass track, and Kllberis was allotted a similar task.

The Jumpers

Master Musk was schooled over eight hurdles In. the centre. He got round safely, but his lumping was a bit patchy. Adsum. Count Rousillion and Neil were sent over a round of the steeplechase course. They started at the sod wall at the top of the straight, and after clearing the second fence of the double, Noll was pulled up owing to a leather giving way. The other pair continued on, Adsum leading his companion by a number of lengths all the way. Count Rousillion ran down the first fence of the double badly, and blundered .at. the second, unseating his rider. After being remounted, he cleared the last fences safely. Later Neil completed the round, giving a first-class dlslatest arrivals include. Russian Ballet. Icing, Rehearsal, and Race Call.

Sovereign Lady ran 6fx furlongs comfortably in Imin 19sec, the first three in 39 3-ssec.

Good Passage and Lazybones covered five furlongs in Imin 3 2-ssee, the last three in 38 l-Ssec.

Shirred Ribbon and Mungatoon galloped a mile in Imin 47 l-sseo.

On No. 6 Graee Owlsglecm easily accounted for Knight Commander over six furlongs in Imin 15 3-ssec, the last four in 61 l-ssec.

Improvident was always in front of Rangemore over five furlongs ip Imin 3 3-ssec, the last four in Slsec.

Shoulder Injury

Lisnacree was given an easy gallop over five furlongs, but had to be pulled up just after passing the winning post, having broken down in a shoulder, ‘ and some difficulty was experienced in getting her home. She was booked to race on the second day at Riccarton, and was to go to Reef-, ton and Nelson, but is now likely to be out for a good while. For Avondale ./

Glenogil figure* in the nominations lor the principal event, the Foley Memorial Handicap, ol £SOO, one mile and a quarter, to be .decided on the first d&y of the Avondale Jockey Club’* autumn meeting. North Island Yearlings G. W. New has taken in hand at Awapuni a yearling bay filly by Gascony from Talari, a sister to Princess Doreen. The filly has been well done and is a racy type. A pair of two-year-old* by Laughing Prince have joined L. G. Morris’* team at Awapuni. One i* a half-sister to and favours Cadland; the other is from the Psychology mare, Sigma. Further yearlings from R. S. Bagby s stable to make their appearance on the Ellerslie track are colts by Siegfried from Polonaise and by Pink Coat from. The Geisha, respectively. They were purchased at the January sales and both appear tractable youngsters. A Difficult Task

A trebles totalisator has recently been inaugurated in Western Australia, but so far no big pools have been handled. At Canning Park a fortnight ago investor* were required to select the winners of the Canning Purse, the Canning Handicap, and the Western Australian Breeders’ Handicap. No one was successful in selecting the treble, and the sum of £35 4s was therefore carried forward to the Goodwood Club’s meeting to be held on April 23, when the totalisator will new operate. Two backers picked the tost two winners and had the favourite Wembley going to complete the treble, and two other ticket-holders would have been pleased if the second horse bad got up in tima,

TROTTING NOTES

Training at Addington The race track at Addington yesterday was in first-class order, although not particularly fast. It had been well harrowed and watered in the early hours, and in consequence, no very fast times were registered, although many of the visiting horses were worked. Australian Pacers The Australian pacers, Joy’s John, Our Walla, and Dan’s Son, were associated in a good work-out over a mile and a Quarter. Kolect joining in after a quarter of a mile had been covered. Our Walla made the running, the half-mile taking Imin 7sec, and the mile 2min 16 3-ssec. A quarter of a mile from home. Our Walla rethed and Joy’s John, Kolect. and Dan’s Son raced over the last furlong, the mile and a quarter being completed in 2min 47sec Opr Walla did not impress by his display, but it is known that he does not Uke racing in front, and the reverse wsy of the work did not help him. Kolect did the best work and made friends by his display.

The G, J. Barton Team Indianapolis showed that his race at Ashburton had improved him when he covered two miles in 4min 31 2-5 sec, alter running the first mile in 2min 20sec. He was allowed to do his best over the last quarter mile, which occupied 31 2-ssec. Mr G. J. Bartons stallion looks as well as ever he did, but whether he is back to his hest form is a question still to be decided. Grand Mogul and Cloudy Range raced together over a mile and a half in 3min 30 2-ssec, and the former did another half-mile, the gross time being 4min 33 4-ssec. Both horses appear to be in first-class order and Cloudy Range may prove to be the best of the five horses Mr Barton has engaged in the championship. Grand Mogul, who always races best In front, was the pacemaker on this occasion and gave a very pleasing display. Both Cloudy Range and Grand Mogul did their work niceiv and trainer J. Fraser did not ask them for their best effort. King’s Play In the whole morning’s work nothing pleased more than King’s Play, who worked over two miles with Navy Blue, Vagabond King followed the pair for fl mile and a half and then retired. The two miles post was reached ■ in 4n.ln 29m, with King’s Play, who hud been the pacemaker throughout, under a good bold at the finish. King’s Play is in great order and will certainly be the favourite m the first heat of the Qualifying Event on Saturday. For a mare hi her class the display of Navy Blue was also Instructive. . , „ , Our Peggy and Lady Fame, in M. Stewart’s care, paced a mile and a half attractively in 3min 30sec, alter going very steadily over the first mile, and Little Reta and Gamer, in company, trotted two miles. A Smart Pacer

Speedy Boy was given steady work over two miles, but was allowed to sprint the last four furlongs in smart time. This Australian-bred pacer is fast, but his racing qualities are unknown to South Island Glenrossie was going nicely at thoend of a mile and a quarter in 2mm 49sec. Agile registering a similar performance, while Aide de Camp, Eighteen Carat, and Blair Athol raced over a mile and a quarter in 2mln 52sec. Bittersweet led Golden Eagle for a mile and a half in 3min 38sec, and both trotters gave pleasing displays. They could have improved upon tire time registered. Southern Chief paced two miles In 4mln 56sec, and was allowed to sprint over the last half-mile. He finished particularly well Hie Two-heat Plan.

Nervle’s Last, who appears to be the pick of F. J. Smith’s Auckland team, was associated with Crocus in a bout over a mile and a quarter in ’2min 56sec, Smith adopts the two-heat plan of training, and later in the morning both pacers were given a workout over a mile and a quarter In 2min SOsec, Nervie’s Last is a high-grade pacer, and races without hopples.

U. Scott Some Interest was. taken in the work of U. Scott,. a visitor from* Yaldhurst. Driven by F. Holmes, .the American pacer raced ‘over 'A mile and a half in 3min 18 3-ssec, the first mile being run in 2min 11 2-ssec. He was paced throughout by Ivy Peterson, who still held an advantage at the finish. From Auckland

King’s Warrior and Ironside were each given two heats over a mile and a quarter, while Royal Doulton, Tempest, and Brigadier were associated in a smart workout Over a mile, which Tempest completed in 2min 10 2-Ssee. The Wrack pacer appiears to be at the top of his form. The Australian, Kernel' Lu, was given strong work" over a mile, and Reylena’s task was confined to a mile and a quarter. At Yaldhurst

R. B. Berry does not attempt to break records in the training of his horses; but; ,his championship candidates, Parisiehne and Lucky Jack, were tiven useful tasks at Yaldhurst yesteray. In recording 3min 31sec for a mile and a half, Parisienne paced her last quarter-mile in 31sec, while in the concluding two furlongs of a two miles workout in 4min 55sec, Lucky Jack did 32sec. Both pacers are in great fettle. A Successful Tear

Mainly because of a rebate of £SOO from the Government on its totalisator earnings and a gift of £2OO from Mr J. R, McKenzie for the classic race, the finances of the Timaru Trotting Club are in a satisfactory position. At a meeting of the club’s committee on Monday the secretary presented a bal-ance-sheet showing a loss of £l2O on the meeting held last month. Mr C. S. Young said that if the £SOO rebate were divided equally between the two meetings there would be a profit of £l3O on the March fixture and of £270 on - the January one. The total profit of £4OO, added to the £2OO given by Mr McKenzie, made a gain of £6OO so far on the year’s operations.
