Recent events support the Chinese claims to victory. The Chinese forces, both regular and guerrilla, are within 25 miles of Shanghai, all efforts by the normal Japanese garrisons from Shanghai and Hangchow having failed to stem them. Ten thousand fresh Japanese troops landed at Pootung on April 2 and marched to reinforce the front west-south-west of Shanghai, where they are hurriedly conscripting coolie labour to build fortifications. Though the Japanese assert that the Chinese claims of successes are based upon lies, the comments of the foreign military observers leave little doubt that the Chinese have retaken Taierchwang, where the Chinese report that 5000 Japanese were killed. The Japanese, who are taking refuge in Yihsien, were severely bombed by the Chinese, who at present are not ready for a concerted attempt to recapture Tsinan. The Chinese claim the capture of Chjniwang and Changshan.

The Moscow correspondent of the •Daily Telegraph” says it is reported from Hankow that the Japanese have appealed for the British Government to mediate for the cessation of the hostilities with China.

The Riga correspondent of “The Times” says that the Soviet Ambas sador to Tokyo has been _ instructed to protest against the violation of the frontier in the Far East by nine Japanese fighting aeroplanes flying over Soviet territory. A Soviet squadron forced down one and captured the pilot, who said that he belonged to the Air Force of Korea.
