ACTIVITIES OF THE FIRST YEAR

MEMBERSHIP OP 604 REPORTED AT ANNUAL MEETING

Formed a year ago, the Canterbury (New Zealand) Travel Club has a membership of 604. It was reported at the annual meeting held last evening that 764 overseas and other guests had been entertained during the year. The chairman of the executive (Mr J. G. D. Ward) presided over an attendance of about 70 members.

The annual report said the club was formed at a meeting called by the Mayor (Mr J. W. Beanland) in February, 1937, and activities were begun in April. Morning teas were held twice a month, with an average attendance of 230. Entertaining and instructive travel talks had been given and altogether the initial activities Of the club had been very successful. A credit on the year’s working of £lO4 16s was shown in the financial statement. Subscriptions and donations amounted to £263 Is. Officers were elected as follows: Patron, the Hon. Sir R. Heaton Rhodes, M.L.C.; vice-patron, the Mayor of Christchurch; president, Mr J, C. D. Ward; vice-presidents, Mesdames M. H. Godby and Cecil Wood, Messrs Norton IVancis, J. R, McKenzie. Edgar Stead, C. H. Clibborn, N. S. Coxhead, A. S. Elworthy, and A. R. Thompson; organiser, Mrs L. L. Benzie; secretary. Miss M. Watson? treasurer, Mrs H. Wyatt: committee, Miss M. Enright, Mesdames R. T. Tosswill, A. Rose, and N, McGillivray, Messrs W. A, Erasmuson, W. F. Hobbs, D. Crozier, and C. G. MeKellar; auditor, Mr B. G. Donovan. •A new constitution, considered clause by clause, was adopted on the motion of the chairman and Mr Erasmuson. and it was decided that the club should be incorporated.
