INTERNATIONAL HOCKEY

USE OF LANCASTER PARK APPLICATIONS FOR THREE SATURDAYS International hockey matches will probably be played on the Lancaster Park oval on three Saturdays this winter. The Lancaster Park Board of Control last evening granted the use of the park on the following dates:—

Saturday, July 2-India v. CanterbU Wednesday, July 6-All-England women's team v. New Zealand. Saturday, July 23-India v. New Zealand.

The Canterbury Women's Hockey Association's application for the use of the oval on Saturday, June 18, for the match between Canterbury and the All-England women's team was referred to a sub-committee to confer with the Canterbury Rugby Union. Representatives of the union on the board said that the association's request would not be opposed, and was subject only to. a financial arrangement. During the meeting the chairman (Mr W. L. King) said he wished it to be known that the board was the controlling authority of the park and all applications for the use of the ground should be made to the board. Some applications had been going in the first instance to other quarters. After the decision about the women s matches had been made on the motion of Mr H. H. Wauchop, Dr. W. S. Seed moved, and Mr J. K. Moloney seconded, that the application of the Canterbury Hockey Association for sole use of the park on July 2 and 23 be granted. Mr A. E. McPhail suggested that the board should wait to ascertain the Rugby Union's position. The union ■might have fixtures on the Saturdays which it could not avoid, and an arrangement between the two organisations to obviate counter-attractions might be in the interests of both. Mr Moloney pointed out that the association asked for the sole use of the park, whereas the women's hockey organisation asked only for. the oval. Presumably they do not mind us playing our games elsewhere ..on those dates," said Mr Moloney.

Mr R. C. Burns: Is there any reason why the back grounds should be left vacant?

Mr R. Beattie suggested that it would not be reasonable to play games on the back grounds at the same time as the international hockey games on the oval.
