THE PLACEMENT BUREAU
| TO THB CDITOB OT THB Mil*. i Sir,—ln view of the large number of men claimed by the Placement Bureau to have been placed in employment recently, the experience of two members of this union is unfortunate. Seeing a notice outside the office that among other tradesmen, carpenters were wanted, they applied, and were given cards addressed.to the foreman in charge of work proceeding on a job in the city. Highly elated, they interviewed this gentleman, who regretfully informed them that he had no work to give them, and that several others had been informed similarly. While giving the officials concerned credit for good intentions in this matter, it shows a lack of co-ordination somewhere; and discounts the returns given to the press of the* number placed in employment very considerably. The card referred to is enclosed herewith.—Yours, etc.. , F. A. MOODY, Secretary, Carpenters' Union, Lyttelton.
April 9, 1938. [The Placement Officer, Mr J. R. Brown, said that the job referred to by Mr Moody was the renovation of Skelton, Frostick's building in Hereford street, recently acquired by the Government. A call was made for carpenters, and the men were sent t» the foreman, who made his own selection. If a man did not obtain employment there, he could use his introduction card again, and could go back to the Placement Service, and inquire for further prospects. No man would be entered as employed unless his card was returned with the employer's statement that he had been given work. The returns were therefore absolutely accurate when they were supplied to the press.]
