TURF GOSSIP

Reminders Final payments for the Great Easter and Great Autumn Handicaps, and the Champagne and Challenge Stakes, and acceptances for the remaining events on the first day's programme of the Canterbury Jockey Club's autumn meeting will close at 5 p.m. tomorrow.

Acceptances for the Greymouth Jockey Club's meeting to be held t>n Saturday next will close at 5 p.m. tomorrow. An Attractive Programme

The programme of the Amßerley Racing Club's annual race meeting on the Amberley racecourse on Saturday. May 7, provides for six galloping and two trotting events, with stakes totalling £BSB. The principal race, the G. B. Starky Memorial Handicap, hack conditions, -will be worth £l3O. and will be run over a mile and a quarter, and the Amberley Handicap, nine furlongs, has a stake of £l2O. The Novice Stakes, for non-winners, six furlongs, the Brackenfield High-weight Handicap, seven furlongs, the Glasnevin Handicap, seven furlongs, and the Seadown Hack Handicap, six furlongs, each carries a stake of £IOO. Nominations for all events will close with the secretary at the Canterbury Jockey Club's rooms at 5 p.m. on Friday, April 22. A Hurried Trip B. H. Morris will ride Oratory in the Easter Handicap and Ecstatic in the Great Northern Champagne Stakes at Ellerslie. Morris will travel by aeroplane to Christchurch on Tuesday to ride Sovereign Lady In the Great Autumn Handicap that afternoon. ... ~„. „_-,,,. ~,..,..,r . : ' ..'.^.( . „,.,-*..'... A-T.C. St Leger John Wilkes, winner of the Chipping Norton Plate at Randwick on Saturday, arrived in Sydney from Melbourne a fortnight ago. and went into quarters at G. Price's stable. His trainer, D. J. Price, is ill in hospital at Caulfield, and will not be able to go to Sydney. John Wilkes's next race will be the St. Leger Stakes as a lead up to his more important engagement in the Sydney Cup on Easter Monday. He is a huge three-year-old. When he was measured a little time ago he was found to be 17 hands, and possibly he has grown since then. It-Is exactly a year ago since John Wilkes was in Sydney. He went there to .race in the Sires' Produce Stakes, but developed a poisoned foot and had to be scratched from all engagements at the A.J.C. meeting. He was engaged in the V.R.C. St. Leger Stakes last month, but his owner, "Mr G. Ornong," scratched him on the advice of his trainer, D. J. Price, as John Wilkes was not ready to run the St. Leger journey. On March 19 the colt surprised by filling a place in the mile and a half handicap at Moonee Valley.

A Solid Opponent After his brilliant Quality Handicap win at Moonee Valley two weeks ago the connexions of El Golea decided to run that horse in the A.J.C. St. Leger and throw down the gauntlet to John Wilkes El Golea is not engaged in the DW caster Handicap in Sydney, as it was thought that he would compete in the minor races, but in view of his splendid win his owner, Mr R. A. Henderson, and trainer, H. Freedman,. consider that El Golea has an excellent chance in the classic. El Golea's appearance in the field will add considerable interest to the Randwick classic, as It seemed as if John Wilkes would have an easy task in beating the moderate Sydney three-year-olds in that race. Heroic's Condition

There are indications of improvement in the condition of Heroic, who is now leading a life of ease at Growee, the property of Mr P. MacFarlane, a few miles from Rylstone, in the Bylong Valley, in New South Wales. Since going to Growee he has .put on a lot of condition and is now using his hindquarters with much more freedom 'than he did when he arrived at Growee. He spends most of the day in a large undulating paddock in which there is a dry creek. Until quite recently Heroic was exceedingly nervous about going down the banks of the creek and experienced great difficulty in crossing it. Now he does it with the utmost confidence and sometimes when in a playful mood takes it almost at a gallop. Though he still lacks complete control of his hindquarters, which suggests that the trouble with him might be in the vicinity of the coupling, Heroic looks remarkably well for a horse who is now rising 17 years. There is probably little chance of his ever resuming stud duty. For Sydney Sales The.Ashhurst owner-breeder, Mr W. T. Bailey, left last week for Sydney, where he will submit several lots at the Easter yearling sales, as well as a two-year-old and the imported stallion Lackham in the supplementary sale. ' ' Three yearlings, all by Lackham, comprise Mr Bailey's consignment. A chestnut colt from Panette is a halfbrother to Pantoon, conqueror of Hua. There is also a chestnut colt from Royal Queen, who is a full brother, to the smart Diamond Cutter, and a half-brother to Golden Enterprise and Royal Tinge. The third of the yearlings is a bay filly from Great Lady, the dam of Distinguished. The two-year-old is a gelding by Lackham or Musketoon from Limoka, a mare by Limond from Oka, dam of the dual Foxton Winner Opa, and that "iron horse" of a decade ago, the Acre gelding First Acre. ■ Lackham has been very successful at the stud in New Zealand. He is the sire of Golden Wings, Mala, Lack, Alchemic. Brown Betty, Clessamor, Gibraltar, Beacon Fire, and many other winners. A half-brother to that good racehorse and successful sire Grand Knight, Lackham is by Rbi Herode (sire :of from the Polymelus

TROTTING NOTES

A Reminder Acceptances for minor events at the Inter-Dominion championship meeting will close at 5 p.m. to-day.

A Casualty Gamble cut a foreleg badly during the running of the Inter-State Handicap at Ashburton and may not be a starter in the championship. M. Stewart's Team

The Auckland trainer, M. Stewart, who drove Transwell and Policy to win at the Taranaki meeting on Saturday, arrived in Christchurch on Sunday with King's Play and Lady Fame, while in the meantime he also has charge of Parrish Belle. Stewart, who is well known in Canterbury as a competent rider and driver, has had much success since he took up his quarters in Auckland and his charge, King's Play, is expected to take a prominent part in the championship. Other arrivals include Our Peggy and Mute from Auckland. From Auckland

F. J. Smith's team, including Nervie's Last, King's Warrior, Cavan Chief, Crocus, and Sandusky, have been doing nicely since their arrival at Addington. Sandusky, a greatly improved pacer, put up a great fight in the Futurity Stakes at Ashburton, and after making most of the running, only failed in the concluding stages when the carefully driven Bayard appeared on the scene. Ashburton has not been the luckiest of courses for F. J. Smith, for last June Sandusky appeared unlucky to be beaten by Two s Loose in the Sapling Stakes, and Nervie's Last finished second to Stirling Lady in the Winter Handicap. Smith is one of the most popular drivers on Canterbury courses, and while he could finish only third with Sandusky on Saturday, he received an ovation from the big crowd for a very plucky effort. Nervie's Last ran a capital race-in the Inter-State Handicap at-Ashbtffton, and while '. e is reported to have been not quite at his best of late, his Ashburton performance commands support at Addington. Australian Pacers

Kolect, who, will race in the nomination of Mr J. P. Stratton, president of the West Australian Trotting Association, is the only Western bred horse to win the West Australian Cup. He is in regular work at Addington and has taken the eye of track watchers as a particularly good type of pacer. He is a solidly-built bay, and his style of moving suggests that he can command a great burst of speed. As-with most of the Australians, his track manners are good. Our Walla Our Walla, in the care of G. Gath, is the most attractive looking horse brought from Australia on this trip, and is a fine type of the standard-bred pacer. The visiting horses paraded at Ashburton on Saturday, on their performances, did not make a very deep impression; but it is evident that the best were not paraded there. Kolect, Our Walla, and Lady Childewood will worthily represent Australia in the championship. The last-named, who made her first appearance in hopples since coming to New Zealand, ran a capital race in the Inter-State Handicap until lack of condition told the inevitable story.
