THE INTER-DOMINION

THE INTER-DOMINION CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Supreme Test of Speed and Stamina

“The evolution of the trotter has been aided by trainers, drivers, sulky builders, harness makers, and track builders. The successful trainers of to-day are thoughtful, hard-working men, with a larger store of information than those of former decades. They understand balancing through shoeing better than their predecessors, and respect the rules drawn up for the preservation of discipline. The material that they handle is far better than that of 20 or 30 years ago, and quicker results are obtained. The tracks and vehicles are seconds faster than when Dexter was heralded as the invincible trotter of the world. The two-minute record for trotting shows that we are fast getting to the time when we can claim that we have a trotting and pacing breed of horses in this country that approximates in breeding to the thoroughbred racehorse in England.” This was the considered opinion of Hamilton Busbey, author of “The Trotting and Pacing Horse,” in 1903, and though in the matter of the speed of our horses we may be 20 years behind America, his words apply to New Zealand to-day as they did in America close on 40 years ago.

It is our turn to boast of our trainers, drivers, and sulky builders, of our harness makers, our shoeing smiths, and track builders, and though we still live in the hope of seeing our first twominute pacer before we produce a two-minute trotter, the leaps and bounds that trotting has made seem to indicate that one of these days we shall reach our goal—the signal of one mile in two minutes by a New Zealand-bred horse. How near we are to that goal is not generally realised, for we cannot judgp the speed of our horses by the time they register in their races. Trotting is an expensive business, and the winning of races with their attendant cash value is a very grave consideration with every owner. The winning of races rather than the registration of time is the aim of every owner and trainer, and the fine stakes offered nowadays and the opportunities for good

horses to win them gives a pang of regret when we remember the limited opportunities of champions of other days, Almont, Ribbonwood, Author Dillon, Great Bingen, and Harold Logan are names that will go down in history, and faster than any of these horses is Indianapolis, whose record of 2min 0 2-ssec for a mile marked him as one of the greatest pacers in the world. Whether Indianapolis can reproduce his wonderful two-minute speed is a question to be answered, for while he has possibly reached the top of his form, there is any number of young pacers ready to occupy the pedestal when he retires. The Inter-Dominion Championships at Addington, commencing on April 16, will give these younger pacers the chance to show their mettle and to prove to a horse-loving public that the Almonts and the Harold Logans live again.
