LARGE COLLECTION OF RATES

POSITION OF SELWYN COUNTY COUNCIL The clerk reported at the monthly meeting of the Selwyri County Council that only £43 was outstanding on the 1937-38 rates and water charges, totalling £6630. This was a collection of 99.35 per cent., and represented a proportion of rates collected that had seldom, if ever, been reached by any of the larger local bodies of late, years. In the Lake Coleridge riding 100 per cent, rates had been collected. The clerk was congratulated upon this collection. There were present: Crs. G. H. Grigg (in the chair), N. J, Brown, E. A. Duncan. K, W. J. Hall, T. D. Jarman, R. H. Johnston, T. E. Pearson, and W. Stone. A motion of sympathy was passed with the chairman (Cr. Gilmour) in his illness. The engineer reported that the contractor had delivered another 963 cubic yards of fine gravel from the Bealey ford, making a total of 1530 cubic yards since screening commenced at this ford on February 21. The crushing plant had finished in the valley pit on March 15, having crushed 2467 cubic yards. The crushing plant had delivered nearly 9000 cubic yards of gravel during the year ended March 31, 1938, and 4734 cubic yards had been screened by contract during the same period. The financial statement for the year 1937-38 was tabled, the credit balance at March 31 being £1726 2s 9d. The finance committee reported that although the credit had decreased by £7OO, the expenditure on roads had Increased, while more than £ISOO had been paid out on capital items. The Main Highways Board advised that the rate of subsidy upon bridge construction after April 1, 1938, would be at the rate of £3 for £l. At the conclusion of the meeting the acting-chairman extended to Cr. Jarman the best wishes of the council for a good trip abroad and a safe return. Cr.. Jarman thanked members for their good wishes, and stated that this would be his last meeting on the council.

Mrs W. J. Edginton (Lavaud street, Akaroa) left on Monday to visit relatives at Thames, North Island. Guests at “Ilfracombe,” Akaroa, include: Mrs. Gilmour (Dunedin), Miss Hetherington (Christchurch). Mr and Mrs Kirk (Ashburton), Mr and Mrs Mouat (Cheviot). Mr and Mrs S. Cox (Christchurch), Miss Banks (Christchurch), Mr and Mrs Parker (Hanmer Springs), Mr Ross and Misses Ross (Ashburton).
