ASHBURTON T.C.

TO-MORROW’S MEETING

The Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting, which will be held tomorrow, will provide the final rehearsal for the Inter-Dominion Championships, for in the Inter-State Handicap are engaged most of the horses that will make their appearance in the big tests, which will commence at Addington on April 16. All the best horses in Now Zealand claim engagement, and the presence of the Australian pacers, Dan’s Son, Joy’s John, and Lady Childewood, will add interest to the racing. It is possibly the best field ever got together on the Ashburton racecourse, and betting will take a wide range. The early favourites are Morello, who is not engaged in the championship, Gamble, Plutus, Parisionne, and Supertax; but in such a big field of first-grade performers the winner is well concealed. Whatever the winner, the race should be a sensational one, and it will give an idea of the possibilities of horses engaged in the championship. The Ashburton Trotting Club has made arrangements to cater for a record crowd, and the accommodation will be fully taxed. Special trains will leave Christchurch at 9.30 a.m. and 9.45 a.m., and the first race will be started at 12.5 p.m. The following horses should race

TURF GOSSIP

Track Work at Kiccarton Conditions were again, ideal for training at Riccarton yesterday, and the outside of the course proper provided excellent going. The inside of this track was kept artificially watered during the dry spell of a m few weeks back. The recent rain has promoted an unusual growth for this time of the year, and the mowing machines have had to bo brought into use. The going for Easter should therefore be better than for many years. Owlsgloam finished in front of Spendthrift at the end of five furlongs in Imin 4soc, the last Tour in 51sec. Impressive Work Sovereign Lady and Wild Chase started off at the mile and a quarter post, and raced abreast throughout, although the former appeared to be going the better at the finish. The time for the full distance was 2min 12scc, the last mile taking Imin 43 3-5 sec, and the last half-mile 53sec. B. H. Morris has been engaged to ride. Sovereign Lady in the Great Autumn Handicap, and will fly down from north on the morning of the race. Wild Chase has done exceptionally well of late, and should give a good account of himself in both big handicaps. A Strong Trio Kinnoull, Rebel Lad, and Grey Honour went olt together from 'the mile post, and reached the half-mile in 51sec. Grey Honour was eased off at the end of seven furlongs, and his stablematos finished together in Imin 43 3-ssec. KinnoulJ showed no ill effects and, with another three or four gallops, should be in his right form for the Great Easter Handicap, in which his prospects are being freely discussed. Rebel Lad is also at his lop form, and if he should, perform prominently in the Sockburn Handicap on Easter Monday he will be entitled to be one of the favourites for the Great Autumn Handicap. Willie Win galloped a mile in Imin 44 4-ssec. He was kept at an even pace throughout without being asked for his best, and covered each half-mile in 52 2-sscc. He has only to bo right

at the forthcoming meeting to be prominent in his engagements. Ponty and Cocksure were brought over from Yaldhurst, and were given a strong working gallop over a mile, taking imin 47sec. Present intentions are to start this pair in both big x-accs. Paper Slipper galloped seven furlongs comfortably in Imin 31 2-sscc, tiie last four in 51 sec. A Smart Seven Dictate and Mungatoon went over (he same ground in Imin 30 4-ssec, the last four in 52 l-ssec. finishing together, an encouraging performance on the part of the latter. Happy Night and Nightcalm took Imin 32 3-5 for the same distance, the last torn- in 53sec. Both these horses will be in excellent order for their Easter engagements. Shirred Ribbon ran seven furlongs in Imin 33scc, and Passenger recorded similar lime. Over Six Furlongs Love Affair and Dividend covered six furlongs in Imin 18 3-ssec, the last four in 51 2-sscc. Haughty Winner and Rabble, with the latter slightly in front at the end, ran the same distance in Imin 16 4-5 sec, the last four in 50 2-ssec. Svvordstick ag;?in finished better than Financicre at the end of six furlongs in Imin 16 2-ssec, the last lour in 51sec. Paper Note and Wine Card recorded Imin 17 3-ssec. The former, who was with P. Hogan for a while, is back in J. B. Pearson’s stable. Golden Chest took Imin 19 2-ssec, Rebel Star and Greek Gold Imin 20 2-ssec, and Courtyard and Gasmask Imin 20 2-ssec. Five Furlong Tasks Settlement and Ruling Star finished abreast at the end of five furlongs in Imin 2 2-sscc, the last four in 50sec, and Gillie and Lady Leigh recorded similar figures. Haulbowline and Guilder followed in Imin 3scc, the last four in 50sec. Defaulter and Maroha occupied Imin 4 l-ssec, and Night Hawk and Gold Trek Imin 3 3-ssec, the last four in 51 l-ssec. Fast Sprinting Disdain reeled off half a mile in 49 1- and Kilrobe followed in 49 2- Improvident ran the same distance in 49 l-ssec. He is a bold galloper, and when more seasoned should develop into a good performer. Others over half a mile included Keen Sight and Every Port 50sec, Pelmet and Comus 50 l-ssec. Gay Parade 50 2-ssec, Density 51 3-ssec, The Wrecker 52sec, Delium 53sec, Lisnacree 52sec, Scuffle and Good Passage 52 4-ssec, and Gaoler 53sec. Over Country Bonnie Rollox (F. Smith) gave a dashing display over five of the schooling steeplechase fences. Provided he remains as sound at at present he will be a decided acquisition to South Island steeplechasers.

Over Hurdles f Grampian (J. Veevers) jumped six | •brush hurdles in fast time. He should race well at Easter. Back at Riccarton The lightweight horseman, J. McFarlane, who has" been on a trip to Adelaide, has returned to Riccarton, and intends to settle there. During his absence, he 'had some rides in Adelaide and secured one win. Another Try has made a reappearance at Riccarton and is' now. attached to A. 'J. Martin’s stable. From Stonyhurst Four yearlings have arrived at Chokebore from the Stonyhurst Stud. They comprise Gay Hind, a filly by Magnus from Winsome Hind; Great Swoop, a colt by Magnus from Swoopalong: Winning Rival, a filly by Bulandshar from Rivalry, and Jameaux Ravine, a filly by Winning Hit from Brave Deed. The Gaming Act At Matamata on Saturday the new members’ stand was opened by the Hon. P. C. Webb, in the absence of the Hon. W. ‘Parry, who was unable to attend because of illness. He stated that he agreed that certain laws like the Gaming Act were antiquated and it was the intention of the Government when it got through with its big legislation to overhaul such acts which had become out of date. Extra Permit Mr Webb promised that the Matamata club iwould get a permit for a second day’s racing. He said that the Minister for Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry, when last in Matamata, had been concerned about the tent accommodation officials of the club had tc use. and he felt that as the club was such a large body it was entitled to an extra permit. However, according to law. Mr Parry had no power, but for next year he had been able to arrange that the club should have a second day’s permit. » Racing at Feilding Although the Easter plans for v Oratory and Catalogue have not been completed, it is likely that both will be racing at Feilding and not at Ellerslie. Lowenberg Doubtful Reports from Hawera indicate that Lowenberg has been lame behind since racing at Stratford, and his trip to Riccarton is now considered very unlikely. 1

Betting at Forbury Park The Forbury Park Trotting Club’s committee decided last night that the single pool betting system, 75-25, should be adopted at the forthcoming winter meeting. The chairman, Mr B. S. Irwin, said he would like to point out that at meetings held last Saturday it was noticeable that where the single pool system had been adopted there had been only a small increase, if any, in totalisator turnovers, whereas on the win and place system the increases had -been substantial.

TROTTING NOTES

Reminders Acceptances for events on the first day of the Metropolitan Trotting Club’s Easter meeting will close at 5 p.m. on Tuesday. The first race on each day of me Easter meeting at Addington will commence at 11.30 a.m. The win and place system of betting will be in operation at Ashburton tomorrow. Bracketed Horses At the'Ashburton meeting on Saturday, the following horses will be bracketed on the totalisator:— Inter-State Handicap—Speedy Boy, Cloudy Range, and Indianapolis; Renown’s Best, Pot Luck, and Worthy Light; Parisienne and Lucky Jack; Satin King and Willow Wave; Plutus and Village Guy. Stewards’ Handicap—Walter Wrack and King’s Guard. Harvest Handicap—Llewellyn’s Pet and Effie Parrish; Donor and Taruna. Australian Horses Although Picador appears in the list of final acceptors for the Inter-Domin-ion Championship, he will not be brought to New Zealand. Dan’s Son is an unlikely starter in the Inter-State Handicap at Ashburton. Scratched First Wrack, an acceptor for the Stewards’ Handicap at Ashburton, will not start. She was withdrawn shortly after the acceptances were made. Young Pacers Acuity, engaged in the Improvers’ Handicap at Ashburton, is a four-year-old filly by Jack Potts from Eileen Dillon, and is a half-sister to Agility, Arklow, and Realeen. She is owned by Messrs C. H. Fairman and J. Amos, and is trained by R. J. Humphreys. Others engaged in the same race include Chatmos by Wrack—Lady Superior, the dam of Cardinal Logan; Chamois, by Brigand-Antelope; Quest by Wrack—Zonophone; Kilrea by Jack Potts—Colene Pointer; Mazaire by Jack Potts—Logan Chimes; and Mongolian by Grattan Loyal—Wild Pointer. A Speedy Trotter Timworthy is set to give away 48 yards in the Allenton Handicap at Ashburton, and his double victory at the recent Cheviot meeting; will probably justify speculators in making him favourite. He has more speed than the majority, and if he trots steadily he should win. He is not yet the ideal racehorse, but in the experienced hands of F. Holmes he is likely to run a good race. * Few of the others engaged have any form to recommend them. Indianapolis J. Fraser is well satisfied with the progress made by Indianapolis, and yesterday morning the Wrack horse did a mile in 2min 15 2-ssec. This represented a useful work-out, for while Indianapolis was kept in the centre of the track all through he was never asked for his best. Lady Childewood Lady Childewood, who is generally acclaimed by Australian sportsmen to be the best of the visiting horses, worked nicely over a mile and a quarter without being fully extended. While she has not done any really fast work since coming to New Zealand, her efforts leave an Impression that she possesses great speed. She will have her admirers in the Inter-State Handicap, to be decided at Ashburton to-morrow. Speedy Boy Speedy Boy has yet to make his' appearance in a race in the South Island, but this poqy pacer is. likely to repay the big price paid for him Like the rest of Mr G. J. Barton's horses le was given useful work at A Idington yesterday. Sprinting Tasks The Australian horses, Joy’s John, Our Walla, Kolect, Kernel Lu, and Dan’s Son, were allotted a few sharp sprints, and all appear to be nicely tuned up for serious business. Dan’s Son, who cost his present owner £ll. and has won more than £3OOO in stakes, does not look worth much more than the price paid for him. but his records show him to be a very capable pacer. He has done a lot of work and is ready to do his best. He will not be a starter at Ashburton.
