MR BEANLAND AND TAXI LICENCES
co tbx editor or rax mess. Sir, —I think Mr Beanlancfs resignation from the licensing committee is rather weak and uncalled-for. and shows want of tact. The Minister for Transport stated he had more evidence than the committee in regard to some of our citizens who held taxi-licences. I think Mr Semple acted in gocd faith and saved some of our taxi proprietors from loss of their business, perhaps ruin and loss of everything they possessed. As some members of our licensing committee hold down two jobs, with fairly good salaries, why should they take away a private owner’s business from him and ruin him? I do not think their policy was one of tact and good cricket. Stone of our taxi proprietors had held licences before some - members of the licensing committee were bom, and had built up a good business, which is carrying them along in their last years. Although these taxi owners have been men of good address, decent citizens, and have done yeoman service for the public in all kinds of weather, their licences and living were to be takem away. I think these men were as much entitled to their taxis their business as were some of our reputed citizens who hold licences for 10. 13. or 20 taxis. There is no doubt Mr Beanland and his committee acted as they thought best, but I write this letter to let your readers see that Mr Beanland was hitting some of our good reputed taxi proprietors below lb« belt.—Yours, etc., FAIRPLAY. April 6, 1938.
