BUDAPEST
Budapest is a city and river port of Hungary, also the capital of the country. It stands on the river Danube, and consists of two towns, Buda, called Ofen by the Germans, and Pest, which were united In 1873. Buda, on the west of the river and the official quarter, stands on hills; Pest on the east, the commercial and intellectual quarter, is in a plain. Round both are extensive suburbs, and they are united by several bridges across the
Danube. The city is 163 miles from Vienna and covers 78 square miles. The most notable building is the palace, built about 1770 and restored in 1894. St. Matthias is the oldest church;., the flnest are the Leopoldstadt and the Franzstadt, both in Pest. The Jews have a beautiful synagogue and there are many other fine old buildings. Budapest has spacious boulevards, wide streets, fine squares, and beautiful parks and monuments. It does a large trade both by land and water; there are extensive docks along the river,
Vienna is the capital of Austria, recently united to 'Germany. It is situated on the right bank of the Danube. The inner city, or Alstadt, contains the Hofburg, formerly the principal imperial residence, the embassies, government offices, and banks. In the heart of the old city is - the cathedral of St. Stephen. The art history museum contains a priceless collection of old masters, and the Liechtenstein gallery has canvases by Rubens and Van Dyck. There are many beautiful old buildings. and about the town are many parka and public garden*
