New Governor of Gibraltar The King has approved of the appointment of General Sir William Edmund Ironside to be Governor of Gibraltar, succeeding General Sir Charles Harington, in October next. New British Clock

A new type of electric clock has been made in Britain; it is of such remarkable accuracy that the error is only a small fraction of a second in a year. The clock is said to be reasonably robust. A similar one is being made for the Greenwich Observatory, where it will be used for national services.

The Boat Race The Oxford crew beat the. Cambridge crew by two lengths in the annual boat race this year. Oxford was smartly away and was a quarter of a length ahead after the first 50 yards. Oxford increased the lead to a length at the mile. Cambridge drew level at Chiswick. Cambridge was striking 38 and Oxford 36. Both slackened down, but Oxford led again at the last half mile, and, in spite of a strong wind, pulled ahead to win comfortably. The time for tjie race was 19J minutes. Both the Mercury and its launching aeroplane, the Maia, which together form the Mayo composite aircraft, are likely to finish their trials about the middle of April. Test flights over Empire routes will then begin, before the first British Atlantic crossing this year. This will be undertaken by the Mercury early in June, when the port of Botwood, Newfoundland, will be clear of ice. Royal Visit to Paris An entire wing of the Quai d’Orsay Palace, which was built in 1845, is being converted into a suite for the visit to Paris in June of King George and Queen Elizabeth. The King will sleep on one of Napoleon’s beds, while one of Marie Antoinette’s beds is arriving from Versailles for the Queen. week-end troops in Austria moved towards the Czechoslovakian frontier, and anti-air-craft guns were set up round Vienna, ■
