RELAY RACE TO AKAROA
ATHLETES TO RUN ON JUNE 25
BIG EVENT OF CROSSCOUNTRY SEASON
June 25 has been selected as the date for the Takahe-Akaroa relay race, the big event of the cross-country season in Canterbury. The race will be held over the usual course, starting at the Sign of the Takahe and travelling round both the Lyttelton and Akaroa harbours. There is a prospect that last year’s record entry of 192 will he exceeded. The cross-country committee of the Canterbury Amateur Athletic Centre, which controls the race, held its first meeting for the new season this week. Mr E. A. Sayers presided and was reelected chairman. Mr J. G. Brown was elected deputy-chairman and was appointed the committee’s representative on the executive of the Canterbury Centre. Mr F. C. D. Taylor was reappointed secretary. It was decided to abandon the interclub competition this year, on the ground that the racing programme was heavy enough without it. June 4 was chosen as the date for the Christchurch Club’s Kennett Cup open steeplechase, over a three-and-a-half-mile course at Riccarton racecourse. A credit balance of £3 10s 2d was shown in the statement of accounts. Delegates were told that this year the clubs would be required to make a special contribution to the Canterbury team’s expenses. This was not necessary last tyear when the meeting was held in Timaru, but will be required this season as the championship race is to be run at New Plymouth.
