HEAVY RAIN IN AUCKLAND
FIRST FALL FOR SOME WEEKS MINOR DAMAGE TO ROADS REPORTED (press association telegram.) AUCKLAND, April 5. The first heavy .rain for several weeks fell in Auckland to-day. Two inches of rain fell within three hours in the afternoon. Moderately heavy falls were recorded throughout the province, and in most districts these were of considerable benefit to pastures, which had suffered during the long dry spell. Although several heavy falls were reported, damage was confined to roads in the Bay of Plenty area, which were badly scoured. In the city and suburbs a very heavy shower about 5 o’clock in the afternoon caused considerable inconvenience to the crowds returning home from work. Traffic was dislocated temporarily, a few minor mishaps occurring on the main outlets from the city. In many cases water channels were unable to cope with the sudden rush of water, and footpaths were flooded; but when conditions improved, the water soon ran away.
During the last three days almost continuous rain has fallen at Rotorua, the fall totalling more than 10 inches. Roads in the district have been badly scoured in places, and low-lying land near the town is under water.
