PRINCE RENOUNCES THRONE
DECISION MADE BY RULER OF LIECHTENSTEIN
ZURICH, March 81,
Prince Frances I, aged 84, has renounced the throne of Liechtenstein in favour of Prince Francis Josef, aged 31. Voicing the Principality’s fears as the result of the annexation of Austria, the Diet passed a resolution in favour of independence, fidelity to the reigning house, and adherence to treaties.
Liechtenstein is a small independent principality situated between Austria and Switzerland. The reigning family originated in the twelfth century and traces its descent through free barons who in 1608 became princes of Liechtenstein. The principality has a population of 10,000, and its customs and postal services are administered by Switzerland. The industries are largely agricultural.
