LONDON, March 31

The Foreign Secretary (LordHalifax), speaking at a Foreign Press Association luncheon, said: “The English people have never remained aloof, and they never can from the happenings in Europe. “There is nothing weak in a spirit of toleration and a desire to avoid war by exhausting every means of diplomacy. There should be no misunderstanding on this point. Britain intends to be strong and to go on building up her strength in order to make its voice powerfully heard in the counsels of Europe.”

The Liberal Parliamentary Party haf tabled a motion to. be moved on April 14 expressing the belief that the Government’s policy endangers the British Empire and world peace, an*. impedes national unity. ( The motion urges the Government to call an immediate meeting of the League Assembly to arrange mutual assistance against aggression, and to operate machinery for redressing national grievances and removing the economic causes of war.
