COUNTY COUNCIL

DANGER TO SEA-WALL

The Akaroa County Council received a complaint from Mr W. Robinson, Red House Bay, on Thursday, that men employed by the Akaroa Borough Council were taking metal from the foreshore and beach in front of his property. He stated that a quarry had been opened on the foreshore, and stones were being taken off the beach, which might endanger his sea-wall. The clerk stated that he had been in communication with Mr Robinson and the Akaroa Borough Council, which originally had had control of the Tip road, but whose control had now lapsed. Mr Robinson had also complained to the Marine Department, through the Akaroa postmaster, he said. Haylock. „ An application from Mr Len Cxaw to have the top end of the Duvau Akaloa track properly formed for use as a motor road was discussed and held over. An application was made by Cn Vogan to have the Pigeon Bay road widened where the road was n , a^°} v near Gunnings gate. This was left to the foreman and Cr. Vogan. Three applications for the position of ranger and dog tax collector were received. Mr C. Innes, Akaroa, was appointed.

X-ray Plant for Hospital The chairman reported on the deputation which waited on the worm Canterbury Hospital Board for the installation of an X-ray P^. a _ n^, ”} e Akaroa Hospital. He said that the necessity for the plant had been stated by the deputation, but so far no reply had been received from the Hospital B *Mr d p. L. Brocherie applied to have his road, leading* to his property at Purple Peak, put in order, as it had not been attended to for some years. He also drew attention to noxious weeds, gorse, and broom growing on the roadside. It was decided to have the road graded and to enforce adjoining owners to clear their frontages of noxious weeds. The council would place men on the work if it were not done at once. _ . . The Public Works Department approved of the completion of the sea wall at Duvauchelle on a three-to-one subsidy basis. The department wrote that they could not pass the portion of wall already erected as it did not comply with the specifications. It was decided that Mr J. Hayward be employed to supervise the work for the erection of the new portion of the SC The foreman reported that points were being taken off . , the , K ®* ’ and it was being widened consider ablv. There would be another week of work there, and the road was being metalled. It was decided to Procure sunolies of metal at the Long Bay summit! and that the county quarry man be sent there as soon as possible. The clerk reported that rates collected for the year were £osbci is out of a Invy of £6659 9s lOd. Only li per cent, of the total, amounting to £96 2s Bd, was outstanding. The financial statement sh °wed receipts since last meeting to be £4095 5s 9d, after payment (£27o 8s Id) and accounts (£4ll 15s Id), the credit balance was £76 14s Bd.

Presentation to Cr. Hay The chairman presented Cr. Hay with a travelling rug from council members, .and wished him a happy and enjoyable trip to Great Britain. C . AKAROA

The vicar. Archdeacon A. J. Petrte. presided at the annual meeting of St. Peter’s branch of the Mothers Union. ( Akaroa). There were present. Mesdames A J Petrie Cenrolling memS. A. M. Helps F. G. Armstrong H. Woodill, G. M Kearney J. E. Ai m strong B. W. Henning, P. G. Riches, E M. g Mav/W. E. M. Jacobson, C. Gabbott C. C. Narbey. Mrs C. Gabbott was’ elected a life member. It was decided to forward liters sympathy to Mesdames G. A. Hammond and T. Masefield in their illnesses. Mrs Petrie reported that pictures of Biblical scenes would be shown at the next three meetings. The following officers were elected:— Enrolling member. Mrs A. J. Petrie; honorary secretary, Mrs W. E. M. Jacobson: honorary treasurer, Mrs E. M May; committee. Mesdames D. G. Wright (Wainui), F. G. Armstrong, H. Woodill. G. M. Kearney. J. E. Armstrong, A. M. Helps, C. C. Narbey, and T. Masefield.

AKAROA CROQUET CLUB’S

SOCIAL

Mrs C. C. Narbey presided at a farewell gathering at the Akaroa Croquet Club in honour of Mrs J. E. Maxwell, a member, who Will live at Hawarden. Mrs Narbey presented Mrs Maxwell with a gift and extended good wishes for the future.

AKAROA PAROCHIAL ASSOCIATION

Archdeacon A. J. Petrie' presided at a meeting of St. Peter’s Church Parochial Association, Akaroa. A motion of sympathy was, passed with Mrs .E. M. May in her recent bereavement, and. it was decided to forward letters of sympathy in their illnesses, to Mesdames G. A. Hammond! and T. Masefield. Mrs C. C. Narbey's gift to the children’s surplices was accepted. It was resolved that the wives of vestrymen in the. association be a committee to consider improvements and spend a certain sum on church furniture. '

SOCIAL AT ASHLEY BANK

To augment the funds of the gold queen of the Returned Soldiers’ Association (Miss Thdlma'‘Peach), 1 a third social" evening was held in the Ashley School. The ; highest scores, in the progressive euchre were gained by Miss T. Peach, Mrs Songster, and Mrs A. Prestriey (Rangiora). For the men, Mr C. C. Pulley and Mr W. Loflhagen tied, Mr Pulley winning in the playoff. Mr A. C. Pulley won the second prize, - Competitions were woh by Mrs Sheppard (Rangiora)’ - and Mr Rr Stewart. • . - ' •
