CIVIL COURT • (Before Mr F. F. Reid, S.M.) TWO PENALTIES CLAIMED A penalty of 10s was allowed when the Labour Department (Mr S. E. McGregor) claimed £lO from Frederick Thomas Bonham, a butcher, for a breach of,the Canterbury butchers’ award in that, being a party to the award, he employed' William Britten between May 22. 1937. and January 15. 1938, and paid him less than the minimum wages prescribed by the award, and a further 10s penalty was imposed for defendant's failing to pay Britten a holiday allowance. JUDGMENT FOR PLAINTIFF Judgment for the plaintiff for £37 9s 2d was given when William Britten (Mr S. E. McGregor) claimed that amount from Frederick Thomas Bonham for wages and holiday allowance under the Canterbury butchers’ award for the period between May 22. 1937. and January 15. 1938. CLAIM FOR WAGES Judgment for the plaintiff for the full amount was given when Edwin James Pegg (Mr S. E. McGregor) claimed £l2 from Sydney Overend (Mr T. K. Papprill) for wages as the defendant’s hired servant from September 1, 1937, to October 30, 1337, at £1 10s a week. * BREACH OF ACT Information was laid against Sydney Overend by the Labour Department (Mr S. E. McGregor) for a breach of the Shops and Offices Act in that he employed Edwin James Pegg as an office assistant and failed to payhun the minimum wages prescribed. Overend, who pleaded guilty, was convicted and ordered to pay costs. A CORRECTION Owing to a typographical error in “The Press” yesterday it was reported that in the Civil Court, before Mr F. F. Reid, SJt, judgment for plaintiff by default had been given in the case of R. T. Cooper v. A. WThe case quoted should have read; R. T. Cowper v. O. W. Owles.
