COLLIE DOG TRIALS

* GERALDINE CLUB MEETS / ~ [THE PRESS Special Service.! GERALDINE. March 31. The Geraldine Collie Dog Club’s annual trials were held on the property of Mr' W. Blair, at Peel Forest, today. Entries were on a par with those of last year. The weather was overcast. Mr J. Davison (Hanging Rock) judged the hill events and Mi; C. Johnston (Mayfleld) the driving event, which will be concluded to-morrow.

With the president, Mr T. T. Ritchie, in charge of a strong committee and Mr T. J. Patterson acting as secretary, efficient arrangements were carried out. • Results were:—

Open Huntaway and Local Maiden, about 500 yards; time limit 12 minutes, possible number of points 60 (30 entries) —W. F. Ross (Methven), Don Junior, 52 points, 1; J. Scully (Orari Bridge), Ben, 48 \ points, 2; G. T. Cain (Rangitata), Brandy, 48 points 3; J. C. Evans (Geraldine), Storm, 45 points, 4. Local Maiden Event (25 entries)— J. Scully (Orari Bridge), Ben, 43 h points. 1; G. T. Cain, Brandy, 48 points, 2: J. C. Evans, Storm, 45 points, 3. Taking the sheep away in excellent style through the first poles W. F. Ross’s Don Junior did good work, but was slightly out of position when nearing the, second pole. He made a good slew and followed on nicely on a good line. He made a slight mistake when nearing the top poles, but otherwise his performance was excellent. Noise and command were good. Time, 7min 29sec.

J. Scully’s Ben got the sheep through the first and second poles on a fair line. He made a rather weak slew, but did very fair work, although he was a trifle high for the third poles. Noise was good and command fair. Time, 9min 28sec. G. T. Cain’s Brandy did fair work through the first, poles, but was off the line slightly through the second. He was weak on the slew, but improved to complete the course. Noise was good and command fair. Time. Bmin 45sec. J. C. Evans’s Storm allowed the sheep to break back, but he recovered well. Desperate work was done through the second poles. He made a fair slew, completing in llmin 50sec.

The dog trials at Geraldine were concluded yesterday. • Results were:—

Open short pull and yard, about 300 yards, time 10 minutes, possible points 60 <3O entries) —J* Mcßae (Waimate). Whitney Dick. 55 points, 1; R. M. Wilson {Kirwee), Gyp, 54£ points, 2; W. F. Ross (Methven); Storm. 54 points, 3; R. M. Wilson (Kirwee), Fly. 53g points, 4.

The judge said that J. Mcßae’s dog cast to left and ran out fairly freely, but rather wide, making a nice head in Imin 29sec. He lifted well, pulled „t' adily, but went a little off the line when nearing the yard. The dog made a good yard in 6min 50sec. R. M. Wilson’s Gyp cast to the right and ran out rather wide. It made a fair head in Imin 56sec, and pulled steadily on a fair line to make an excellent yard in Bmin 34sec. W. F. Ross’s dog also cast to the right, but went very wide and was rather high on heading. He lifted well, pulled steadily, but slightly off line. Storm yarded in good style in 6min 56sec.

He came in rather close on head and lifted well, and pulled steadily on a good line. He held the sheep well in the ring to complete in smin 24sec. Fly was cast to the right, going out freely on a good line. She made a splendid head and pulled well on a good line until nearing the flat, when she allowed the sheep to drift slightly. Fly held the sheep well in the ring and completed in 6min 40sec. Cash was cast to the right, going out very fast, but coming in rather close • before heading. It pulled steadily on a good line until nearing the ring, when the sheep were allowed to drift slightly to the left. Cash held well in the ring to complete in 6min 54sec. Open driving competition, three sheep to be driven through two separate hurdles and two poles, and yarded, man to follow sheep through hurdles and poles, time. limit eight minutes, possible points 60 (25 entries) —W. ANNUAL MEETING OF =, CLUB AT ELLESMERE

The annual meeting of the Ellesmere Collie Dog Club was held in the Ta! Tapu Hall. Mr J. H. Mackenzie (president) presided. The secretary reported that the club had a successful year, and the trials for 1937 had been well patronised. It was that the 1938 trials would be held on May 16, 17, and 18, and that the sheep were being loaned by Sir R. Heaton Rhodes. Entries would close on May 2.
