ERNEST’S GREAT-GRANDFATHER CALLS FOR LADY GAY
Lady Gay jumped on board a boat with a red funnel, and said to the captain, in a very polite voice, “Please take me north till you come to the capital of New [Zealand.” Early in the morning the boat arrived in the harbour of the capital of New Zealand, and there, if you please, was Ernest the Engine’s great-grandfather waiting on shore, with a nice welcoming smile on his big, round face. “Jump on board, Lady Gay,” he said, “I’ll take you still farther north.” Then up and up and up they went into the heart of the North Island. They whizzed over its backbone, and once they went in and out and round about, till Lady Gay could see the red sparks of Ernest’s great-grandfather as he turned a corner at the head of -the train. They stopped awhile at a big town on a beautiful harbour, and then puffed out again. On and on and on they went, and early in the afternoon they came to a town starting 'with “W.” It is a pretty little town, with hills all round, and a river which opens into a harbour. Ernest’s grandfather (or rather his great-grandfather) went puffing on, but Lady Gay decided to stop awhile and have a look round at an old settlement founded by men and women from Scotland and Nova Scotia. To-morrow, Ernest’s great-grandfather says he will call for her again, but Lady Gay thinks she will walk right on into a wonderfully sunshiny country of hills and harbours and little bays. But where is she now? This is the first of three letters. Fill in the form below and keep it. There is a Prize, a souvenir for the three neatest and most correct answers. The next will be harder, • LADY GAY.
