WORK TO CONTINUE AT BIG SLIP

DECISION BY GREYMOUTH BOROUGH COUNCIL GOVERNMENT GRANT NOT YET APPROVED Whether or not a grant will be made by the Government towards the cost of removing the big slip just outside Greymouth on the Greymouth-Reef-ton main highway is being considered by Cabinet, and a reply to the representations made by the Greymouth Borough Council for assistance will probably be received next week. This is the information given by Mr James O’Brien, M.P., yesterday, after his visit to Wellington, when he interviewed the Minister for Finance, the Hon. W. Nash. It is impossible, said Mr O’Brien, for the Minister for Employment, the Hon. H. T. Armstrong, to make a grant, as only a small number of tne men engaged at the slip are from the ranks of the unemployed. . . , The Mayor, Mr W, Meldrum, stated yesterday that the council would continue the work in the meantime, confirmation had been received that the council had the free use of certain Public Works plant and co-operation from the Railways Department, also without charge. SCHOOL GARDEN PARTY SUCCESSFUL GATHERING AT WESTPORT The Westport Technical High School’s annual garden party, held yesterday in excellent weather, was a great success. A feature was tlje staging on the green of Shakespeare’s play, “As You Like It.” Those taking part were:—R. Betts (Duke Frederick), Dorothy Garvey (le beau), Maisie Wood (Oliver), Ruby Salter (Orlando), Rose Seaton (Dennis), Merle Woodcock (Adam), Patty Dymond (Touchstone), Joan McKay (Rosaland), Mona Lang (Celia), and Eileen Kay (Charles the Wrestler). The play was produced by Miss Wigley, of the teaching staff, and the dresses were designed and made by the dressmaking classes. The students gave a fine performance. The gathering was a financial success, the gross takings exceeding £7O. This is the best result for some years. Competitions were won by the following:—Grey House: Mesdames W. H. Johnston, G. Anderson, J. Stowell, Miss Jean Robertson, and Master SBowden; Marsden House: Mrs T. Neighbours. Messrs J. M. Robertson, W. Hawes, Dennis Moynihan, and Miss N. McDonald; Seddon House; Mrs E. Broad. 1 A SUCCESSFUL YEAR MEETING OF WEST COAST HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY Although it had been cesessary to abandon the chrysanthemum and dahlia shows, because of bad weather, the work done during the year had been most successful, stated the annual report adopted at the annual general meeting of the West Coast Horticultural Society on Thursday evening at Greymouth. Mr R. C. Cooper presided. Thanks were expressed in the report to Mr F. A. Kitchingham for his keen interest in the work of the society, to the ladies’ committee for splendid work in assisting the finances, and to all who had contributed to the year’s operations. The balance-sheet, showing receipts at £7O 2s 4d and a credit of £l9 7s, was adopted. The election of officers resulted:— Patron, Mr F. A. Coumbe; treasurer, Mrs G. McKay. SINGLES BOWLING CHAMPIONSHIP C. MITCHELL WINS WESTPORT CLUB’S FINAL The Westport Bowling Club’s singles championship was won by C, Mitchell. In the final yesterday afternoon he defeated C. Sara by 25 points to 14. Mitchell scored nine in the first three heads and his opponent could not make up the leeway. Both Mitchell and Sara have been playing well this season, but their match yesterday did not reveal brilliant bowling. The Buffer Bowling Centre’s pairs championship will be played on the Westport green to-day. when the Millerton, Waimangaroa, Denniston, Granny. Sergeant’s Hill, and Westport Clubs will be represented. OBITUARY MISS JOHANNA CURTIN The death occurred at Westport last evening of Miss Johanna Curtin, a highly-respected resident of the Buller district. Miss Curtin, who was 67 years old, was born at Brighton, but spent most of her early years in the Karamea district. She had resided in Westport for 36 years. She is survied by two brothers, Messrs John Curtin (Hamilton) and Cornelius Curtin. UXb[ Arohai-
