OBITUARY
MR H. A. LE CREN The death occurred recently of Mr Herbert Alexander Le Cren, of Mornington, Dunedin. Mr Le Cren was a son of Mr H. J. Le Cren, who arrived in Canterbury before the First Four Ships and settled in Lyttelton. He later went to Timaru, where his son was bom. Mr Le Cren received his early education at Mr Stanley’s school in Dunedin, and later attended Lancing College, England. At college, Mr Le Cren gained honours in rowing and running. Returning to New Zealand in 1882, he joined the staff of the Bank of New Zealand, and held positions at Dunedin, Timaru, and Oxford for 16 years. He later carried on an agency business until his retirement.
Mr Le Cren was a member of the Mornington Borough Council for five years from 1903, and was Mayor for three years, during which time he was instrumental in. having water and electric supplies extended to the borough. He was a member of the Benevolent Trustees, the Hospital Trustees, the Otago Harbour Board, and the Drainage Board; He was also a Justice of the Peace. He continued to take an interest in athletics, and was a life member and vice-president of the Otago Rowing Club, He married in JBBB, and is survived by his widow, a son, Mr H. Le Cren (Christchurch), and a daughter, Mrs Leslie Williams (Sydney).
