“PUBLICITY” FOR HOCKEY

SOME OF IT SAID TO BE UNDESIRABLE DISCUSSION AT ANNUAL MEETING “Undesirable publicity, some of it,’’ said Mr W. H. Down, at the annual meeting of the Canterbury Hockey Association at the Pioneer £Jports Club last evening. Mr Down made this remark as the retiring president, Mr C. S. Clements, was concluding a resume of the annual report, and referred to the work the newspapers had done in giving publicity to the meetings of the executive of the association and to the grade games and representative fixtures. Mr Clements said that the association had never before received such publicity. “I do not know of any undesirable publicity, though I am open to correction,” he replied to Mr Down. The matter was mentioned again by Mr L. L. Smith, in speaking on the adoption of the financial statement. “Mr Down seems to be unfavourably impressed with the publicity we got,” he said. “Many persons outside the association, and not really interested in hockey, have told me how pleased they .were that the association was willing to tackle its problems, and come out into the open with them. We should let the people see that we are handling our problems to the best of our ability. It is no use going behind closed doors and trying to husb things up.”
