JAFFA

Jaffa is a seaport of Palestine, formerly know as Joppa. It is on the Mediterranean, about 50 miles north* west of Jerusalem, with which it connects by railway, Jaffa’s harbour is suitable only for small vessels. The town has long been famous for its oranges, and is the centre of a fair amount of trade —oil, corn, sesame, cotton, leather, and wool being among Its exports. The industries include the manufacture of furniture, soap, and cement. The town was taken, by Napoleon in 1799, and was captured by the British in 1917.
