SUMNER BOROUGH COUNCIL
CR. J. E. TAIT ELECTED
MAYOR A meeting of the Sumner Borough Council was held last evening, when there were present the Deputy-Mayor (Cr. J. E. Tait). Crs. H. Y. Widdowson. F. T. Eldridge. E. T. Chitty, C. E. Claydon, and G. F. Allen. Because of the death of the Mayor (Mr T. Newburgh) a special meeting was held before the ordinary, meeting for the purpose of electing his successor, and Cr. J. E. Tait was elected Mayor for the remainder of the term. Cr. G. F. Allen was elected DeputyMayor for the remainder of the term. It was reported that 82 chains of new gas mains had been laid besides taking up old mains and cleaning all services as they were transferred. A decided improvement in the supply to consumers had been attained.
It was reported that stones and tins had been removed from the Redcliffs playing area and the ground ploughed, disced, and harrowed. It was decided lo apply to the Minister for Labour for a further grant toward the work. Building permits to the value of £l7l 6s 6d had been issued for the month of February, making a total from March 31, 1937, to February 28, 1938, of £11,094 16s 6d. The Mayor said that application should be made to the Postal Department for permission to round off the corner on the site of the present Post Office, when it became vacant. He said that there had beep several narrow escapes from serious accidents at this point, and he thought that a plan of this corner should be prepared. An application from a number of Redcliffs residents for a footpath on Estuary road west was referred to the works committee. Mr H. J. Marriner submitted the plans of the proposed cherry avenue along Wakefield avenue. The plan was referred to the Mayor, Crs. Claydon. and Eldridge to investigate and put in hand.
Cr. Alien referred to the necessity of having a definite reading policy. He looked forward to the time when a number of roads could be tar-sealed to stop the waste at present going on. Cr. Chitty said that he understood that anything of this nature would be deferred until all the new mains had been laid. The question was referred to the works committee to draw up a programme for submission to the new council. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs T. Newburgh and her family, and as a mark of respect the council adjourned for 10 minutes. Cr. Tait said that almost at the end of their term of office they had lost one for whom they all had a very high esteem. He referred briefly to the work that both Mr and Mrs Newburgh had done for the borough, and extended to Mrs Newburgh and her family the deepest sympathy of the council.
