NOTES ON THE RACING

Flame Queen Wins Netherlea was sent out a good favourite for the Trial Stakes, but again failed to improve upon a minor placing. The race had not been long in progress before -'ink -Lad fell and Fayo fell over him. Flame Queen rushed to the front at this stage and had a useful lead entering the straight from Steer Clear, Netherlea, Nigella, Romarin, and Poetic. Steer Clear made a good effort to get up, but Flame Queen won decisively. Netherlea was a fair third, a head in front of Romarin. Lisnacree headed the remainder. Superex Makes Good McHeath and Po uard closely contested favouritism in the Autumn Highweight, but both were well beaten by

Superex, who was always handy and, racing generously, had a comfortable win. Drink Up and Darecourt raced abreast from the early stages and entered the straight in front of Superex, Poniard, and McHeath. Darecourt did not last long in the run home and Superex had Drink Up’s measure a furlong from the post. McHeath put in a useful finishing run to get up to beat Drink Up for second money. Poniard was two lengths back with Darecourt and Nocturnus tailing off. The Favourite Fails Wee Potts was made a good favourite for the Weston Trot Handicap, but moving off slowly, was never able to improve from a rear position. Devotion and Johnnie’s Hope were the early leaders, but the latter went to the front at the end of half a mile and led through the back stretch from King Potts, Battlevale, Sylvie’s Best, and Mandrell. King Potts displaced the leader rounding the home turn, and led into the straight from Mandrell, Battlevale, and Peter Bee. The finish was uninteresting, King Potts winning conclusively from Mandrell with Peter Bee a fair third, half a length in front of Token and Battlevale. The Cup Contest Galleon justified his even-money favouritism for the Oamaru Cup by a comfortable win. He was well back over the first six furlongs, but then moved up to the leaders, and followed Rebel Lad and High Glee into the straight. Galleon drew up to Rebel Lad a furlong from homo and carried or; to win from Mungatoon, who finished from a rear position and got +o .within half a length of him; but Galleon had something in hand. Linguist was a neck away, a head in front of Rebel Lad. High Glee and Queen Dorothy were close up. Stratosphere, who was the early leader, but drifted during the middle stages, dropped dead a few strides past the winning post. Led Throughout Dracula was sent out favourite, but at a good price, for the Windsor Hack Handicap and, hopping out smartly from an inside position after drawing No. 7 at the barrier, he was always in the lead, and was followed by Rabble. Atalanta Lass. Bcllerivc, and Salient Knight into the straight. Rabble made a strong challenge in the run home, but could not make any impression on Dracula, who had more than a length to spare at the post. Salient Knight finished well in third place, half a length in front of Bright Prospect and Balmenter. An Impressive Victory Silver Streak returned to the winning list by an impressive victory in the Stewards’ Handicap. Haugnty Winner was first to show out, hut when Royal Gallant went to the front at the end of half a mile he dropped back to a rear position. Ponty and Double Gift then joined Royal Gallant; and Ponty was first into the straight from Double Gift, Silver Streak, and Haughty Winner. Silver Streak had Ponty's measure early in the run home, and was not troubled to win from Haughty Winner, who made a renewed effort in the straight, while Roseman, who was last away in an unsatisfactory start, finished solidly in third place, just beating Ponty. Double Gift, whose rider lost his irons in the run home, was next. Adverse Prevails New Ideal, fourth choice for the Redcastle Handicap, attempted to record an all-the-way win, and only failed in the last few strides. He was followed- into the straight by Adverse, Jane Worthy, Francisco, and Royal Crescent, and appeared to have the race in safe keeping until Adverse drew up to him 100 yards from the post, with Jane Worthy, Great Don. and Francisco in close attendance. In a hard finish New Ideal weakened nearing the line and Adverse got up to beat him by a length. Jane Worthy was a similar distance away, half a length in front of Francisco, with Great Don and Lord Zetland next. Cocksure’s Return In spite of not having had a race for a long time, Cocksure carried most money in the Parkside Handicap, anil again investors showed the right judgment. Amount and New Note raced abreast in front to the straight entrance, with Cocksure, Volo Dale, and Silver Sail handy. Cocksure soon drew to the front in the run home and was never in danger of being overhauled. Glenacre came from well back to gain second money from New Note, with Volo Dale and Silver Sail next.

TURF GOSSIP

A Successful Meeting The Oamaru Jockey Club’s meeting yesterday was one of the most successful held on the course for a long time. Since its last meeting considerable improvements have been made to tracks and grounds, and now the, course is one of the most up-to-date of its class in New Zealand. The meeting will be concluded on Saturday and several fresh horses are expected to be paraded so that another excellent day’s racing should be provided. A special train will leave Christchurch at 7.7 a.m., arriving at the racecourse about an hour before the first race. The return train will leave Oamaru at 6.30 p.m., and will arrive in Christchurch at 11.28 p.m. Favoured with fine weather a large crowd is expected to make the trip from Christchurch. Dropped Dead Stratosphere, an aged gelding by Polazel from Miss Varco, bad just passed the post in the Oamaru Cup yesterday, when he staggered and fell dead. Mr J. Beattie, owner of the gelding, has asked for a post-mortem examination which is to be made to-dsy* and this will be considered at a meeting of the stewards on Saturday. A Bad Sign Nocturnus did not show much dash in his race at Oamaru yesterday, and as he was lame afterwards, his future prospects do not at present appear very bright. Not Serious Silver Streak limped on returning to the enclosure. He has however often suffered from soreness, but it has never been of too serious a nature to put him aside for any extended period. For Riccarton Galleon won the Oamaru Cup in good style, and there is now every possibility of his being at Riccarton at Easter. L. J. Ellis has been engaged to ride him.

Not Encouraging Wagner, having his first start in jfhe South Island, was confidently supported for the Parkside Hack Handicap at Oamaru yesterday, but after bucking and kicking he was placed on the outside of the field. He missed the jump out and was soon well back in the big field. He finished eighth. Even with a reasonable start he would not have been troublesome. A Promising Effort Glenacre ran the best race of his career to act as runner-up to Cocksure yesterday. Making a moderate beginning he gradually improved his position, but when the straight was reached he was still well back. Unwinding a good turn of speed he finished in great .style to cut out New Note and Volo Dale for second place. This gelding is getting on in years, and may not be- susceptible to much improvement, but in his present form he should soon win a hack race. Alertness at Barrier

Rabble put up a solid fight, against Dracula yesterday, after giving the latter an appreciable break turning for home. Dracula’s early advantage was mainly due to his rider’s alertness in anticipating the starter and leaving the barrier from third berth instead of seventh. A complaint from the owne, of another horse in the race was made against the starter for allowing this change to take place, but the stewards decided that there was no cause, for any action.

TROTTING NOTES

Reminders Nominations for the Ashburton Trotting Club’s autumn meeting will close at 8 p.m. to-day. , The final payment of £3O for the inter-Dominion championships must be made by 5 p.m. to-day. Final payments for the Ashburton Trotting Club’s Futurity Stakes will close to-day at 8 p.m. Inlcr-Daminion Championships Great interest centres in the final payments for the inter-Dominion championships, and these will be taken up till 5 p.rn. to-day by the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club. Most of the New Zealand horses engaged will be paid up for, but tfie mam interest centres in the decisions of owners of Australian horses. No meeting in the history of trotting or racing in New Zealand has offered such big prizes as will be competed for at Easter, and no meeting has attracted the number of Australian horses booked to compete in the coming fixture. The absence of Lawn Derby is to be regretted, but his trainer, W. J. Shea, expressed his dissatisfaction with the handicapping of his horse and refrained from making the first payment. The Australian pacer had been set the task of a champion; but pos- , sibly he is better than any horse racing in New Zealand to-day, and the champion Indianapolis is not excepted. In the Championship Trial decided in Melbourne on Monday, Lawn Derby conceded up to 108 yards start over a mile and a half, and it takes nothing short of a champion to do this. Included in the field were several horses engaged in the championships, and the result suggests that the Globe Derby horse was not badly treated by the New Zealand handicappers. Without actually winning the championship, horses are afforded great opportunities of winning big stakes over distances ranging from a mile and a quarter to two miles, and a minor placing in any event will more than pay all nomination and acceptance fees. Perth and Adelaide have provided the star attractions in recent years, and it is New Zealand’s opportunity to show to a horse-loving public one of the greatest meetings the world has known. A four-day meeting has been made possible by the transfer of the Metropolitan Trotting Club’s February permit and the surrender of one from Kaikoura. Four days’ racing will be provided, and while the championship will provide the big attraction, owners of other horses will be provided with racing as good as could be expected at any time of the year. One of the keenest sportsmen in the world of trotting, Mr J. P. Stratton, is one of the joint presidents, with Mr H. F. Nicoll, president of the New Zealand Trotting Conference, and Mr,J, H. Williams, president of the Metropolitan Trotting Club. It is expected that at least 10 Australian pacers will make the final payment. Australian Entrants Australian horses still remaining in the inter-Dominion championships include: Joy’s John, Kernel Lu, Major Speed, Our Walla, Picador, Simple Bee, Wilveranj, Wonga Pronto, Arab Chief, Belalie, Dan’s Son, Kolect, Lady Chjldewood, and Wrinkle, Of this number, Lady Childewood is already at Addington, but Major Speed and Wrinkle are unlikely starters. The Favourite As soon as the final payments for the inter-Dominion championships are made, nrospects for the race will be the main topic of discussion, and while the form of the Australian pacers is practically unknown in New Zealand, a number of local horses are already in favour. R. B. Berry, with Lucky Jack and Parisienne, holds a particularly strong hand, while C. S. Donald, with Plutus, and M. Holmes, with Pot Luck, have many admirers. These horses are the early favourites, but the arrival of the visitors may cause a big reversal of opinion.
