HOPE

•o THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS. Sir —one of your correspondents asks what is the meaning of Watt’s picture of “Hope.” Like many, others I do not accept Orpen’s opinion; the real meaning is a very much higher one. The painting represents and is founded on the Greek myth of Pandora, and shows how when all the virtues flew away “Hope” remained, how the last string is being played, despite the life

that is blindfolded, that cannot see, and there is one * lone star above the head of the lady sitting on the round world. Hope is the last star, which never fades out into oblivion.- The last string on the harp of life is the string of Hope.

Hope, like the glimmering taper’s light. Adorns and cheers our way, -And still, as darker grows the night. Emits a brighter ray. This is the real meaning of this beautiful painting.—Yours, etc., (Captain) A. TORRANCE, March 19. 1938*.
