NORTH CANTERBURY NEWS

MINERAL SPRINGS AT HANMER

During the last three weeks the Public Works Department has been engaged in removing the wooden framework around the two open mineral springs at Hanmer Springs, and replacing them in concrete. The work has proved rather difficult because of the constant flow of water from the springs. To cope with this, a motor pump is being used to keep the water at a low level, and the workmen are supplied with thigh-boots. . The water from the two main bores, which normally flows into the springs so that the gas may be gathered, is being piped direct to the various bathhouses. When the concrete work has been completed, iron catchments for collecting the natural gas rising t rom the water will be placed ° v ® r tl^ e springs. The gas which is led to a gasometer by underground pipes, is used to provide heating in the tea kiosk.

COCKSFOOT CROP

HIGHER YIELD ON BANKS PENINSULA

FAVOURABLE REPORTS RECEIVED

In most cases cocksfoot growers on Banks Peninsula have harvested heavier crops this season than last. The advantage of this year’s coop has been the weight of the seed which has maintained a fairly high average, with a few lines only of light seed. The 1937 crop was estimated to be the worst for 30 years, and this was due to the seed being particularly light though the yield was not low. The carry-over of this seed has gradually gone into consumption, and during the last two months about 2000 sacks of farmers’ dressed seed have been sold. The amount of the present season’s crop, which has been purchased by seed firms, is between 8000 and 10,000 sacks of farmers’ dressed seed, so that between 10,000 and 12,000 sacks of seed have already been sold. Favourable reports of the present season’s crop have been received after it has been dressed. , . The purity standard of 70 per cent, fixed by the Department of Agriculture has been maintained, and it is reported that so far the seed passing through the dressing sheds has maintained a purity standard of from 72 per cent, to 76 per cent. There are several thousand sacks of cocksfoot still held by Banks Peninsula growers. It has been stated that unless prices for cocksfoot are on a payable basis Banks Peninsula growers will use their areas for grazing. Last season’s crop was a disappointment to many growers, but this season the returns from cocksfoot areas, with an average yield of seed and prices at from 8d to lOd per lb, have been satisfactory. Harvesting costs of crops on Banks Peninsula make it necessary for growers to receive fairly substantial returns, otherwise these seed areas will go back into grazing, it is stated.
