PARENTS’ EDUCATIONAL UNION

At belwyn School house, Papanui road, the monthly meeting of the Parents’ National Education Union, held last night, took the unusual form of hj discussion meeting, when parents and teachers put forward their views on questions concerning the education of the pupils, Mrs L. G, Pocock was In the chair.

Miss Holdemess, headmistress, explained that the teachers would welcome the opinions of parents with regard to (1) homework, and (2) healthy employment of leisure. The second point was discussed first. Dr. Leslie Will, Dr. Mark Brown, Mr E. J. Chennells, Mr Geoffrey Hamilton, Dr. Douglas Anderson. Mrs Plowden Wardlaw, Mrs E. C. Gough, Mrs Lush, and Mrs D. Anderson all making contributions to the discussion. Mrs Pocock pointed out that the use of leisure out of school must vary with the child. If the child was intended to sit for matriculation or other outside examination, then she must specialise to some extent, and being limited by time, certain subjects must be dropped so that more time might be devoted to those subjects necessary for the examination Some of the other teachers spoke in reply to points raised.

Miss Holdemess, in discussing the use of the time between school and adult age, pointed out that there were many organisations needing voluntary workers, where the girls might do useful work. Their object, she said, was to turn out citizens sound in mind, body, and tastes. Mrs Norton Francis said that many of the “old girls” met weekly to road and study, and Miss L. Loughnan offered to continue the study of musical appreciation with the girls who had left school. At the conclusion of the discussion supper was served by the staff of the school.

ST. PATRICK’S BALL

SUCCESSFUL GATHERING AT LEESTON

Many guests enjoyed the hospitality of St. John’s branch of the Hibernian Society at a ball given in the Leeston Town Hall to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Among the visitors were Mr McDonough, president of the Provincial Council of the Order, and representatives of all the friendly societies in the district. '

Music was supplied by Mr Colin Campbell’s band, and Messrs L. McCloy and E. J. Slattery were the masters of ceremonies. Prizes for a novelty dance were won by Miss M. Greenan and Mr N. Owens. At cards, the successful players were Mesdames J. McCormick and J. Beach, Messrs T. Carroll and J, Adams. COMING-OF-AGE PARTY

An enjoyable dance was held in the Selwyn Street Hall to celebrate the coming-of-age of Miss Ursula Templeton, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs A. Templeton (Spreydon). A musical item was given by the “Hilo Four,’’ and winners of the novelty dances werp Miss G. Wendelken and partner, Miss G. Banfield and partner. Miss E. Hall and partner. Mr M. Clark was master of ceremonies, and Mr P. Bryon’s orchestra supplied the dance music.
