England’s greatest actress, Fay Compton, and her complete . London company, in Laurence Housman’s famous drama, “Victoria Regina,” will be presented by the management of J. C. Williamson, Ltd., at the Theatre Royal to-night at 8 o’clock. “Victoria Regina” is the reigning theatrical attraction in London, and in it Miss Compton and her company achieved a sensational triumph in Auckland and Wellington recently. Miss Compton’s Victoria, from the age of 18 to . that of 80. demands her continuous appearance bn the stage and repeated changes of make-up, combined with delicately shaded indications of the changes of time and domestic influence upon an imperious will. With subtle art Miss Compton, it is said, makes an everlasting picture of the woman and the queen, lovable even in her tolerant prejudices, often humanely democratic and susceptible to cajolery, but intensely jealous of her It is a tremendous role, entailing the demands of at least half a dozen ordinary roles, and involving delicate gradations of voice and deportment. Fay Compton’s brilliant artistry, first as a romantic girl and bride, then a happy wife, . then as the brokenhearted widow, and finally as the tired old woman, holding her burden of State, but living the memories of the past, will prove a revelation to playgoers here, as it has done in other parts of the world. Through 10 scenes created by the author as the outline of the portrait. Fay Compton delicately brushes in dramatic colours to bring out the emotional features which make “Victoria Regina” a Jiving picture to the audience. Mr Bruno Barnabe is said to be perfect in the role of Prince Albert. He invests the role with dignity, gallantry, and quiet humour. The scenery and effects are. features of the production, as are the magnificent dresses and uniforms! The production is staged under the direction of Mr Peter Bearing.
