STUD RAM FAIR

GOOD SHEEP SELL WELL

TOP CORRIEDALE PRICE 160GNS SOUTHDOWN 132GNS

Fine weather, after an unpromising morning, prevailed for the second day of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s ram and ewe fair, held on the Addington Show Grounds yesterday. Breeders were present from widely separated parts of the Dominion, most of them either sellers or buyers. The sale was a good one for quality sheep in practically all the breeds. There was a fairly free sale for average to g'ood Corriedales, but anything that did not measure up to standard met with practically flock prices. This was noticeable in the Corriedale, Southdown, and English Leicester, breeds. The sale was held in two sections, Corriedales, English and Border. Leicesters. and Romneys in one and Southdowns in the other.

In the early part of the Corriedale sale passings were the order, only occasional pens selling. Later in the sale there was a freer disposal, competition being stimulated by the high prices at which some of the better rams were sold. Apart from the special sheep good quality rams sold at from 25gns to 40gns, and ordinary sorts at from 12 to 20gns. There was a fair “tail” in the entry, which was passed at little more than the upset price. Top price of the fair was well above' that of last year—l6ogns as against 92Jgns. This price was secured by J. H. Grigg (Longbeach), who established a record which has not been surpassed at the fairs. Mr Grigg sold four others at ISOgns, 90gns, and 57i and 55gns, the average for the five being Itfcfcgns. A number of breeders were in the competition for these rams, which were excellent types.

Good Southdowns Sell Well

Southdowns met with a similar market to the Corriedales. The outstand-

moisture. This has been the case right down from Kaikoura to the Rakaia. The desire in coastal North Canterbury is for some dry weather to harden feed. This week, however, there have been general rains down to South Canterbury. On Wednesday lambs quite forward enough for rape were sold at about 15s. Six weeks ago they would have made another 4s or ss. But it was for the medium carryover wether lamb, that the market slipped the most. Numerous pens of these sold at 10s and even less. The season for store lambs is generally over when the ewes go on to the farms, and to this fact may be attributed the slack sale on Wednesday. - FAT LAMBS Lack of weighty lambs continues to be marked in the fat lamb section. Where there is some weight the butchers come into the competition. The easing of a farthing in the schedule was reflected on Wednesday in a lower price level, although in cases butchers bid up to 8d per lb. FAT SHEEP Probably not wanting to be out of step with the general movement in sheep values, fats on Wednesday opened very slackly, rates all round being down by about 2s a head. Exporters were little in the market, it being understood that the works are well supplied with ewes at the moment. Light wethers came within exporters’ schedule, which has rarely been the case previously this season, but exporters took little interest. Later in the day, when it was realised that the market was of no more than normal size, there was better competition, and in the final stages there was little difference with the prices ruling last week. Some big Chatham Island Romney cross wethers, which sold as stores last November at from 22s 6d to 235, ranged from 29s 6d to 32s 7d on Wednesday. Some of the locally-bred light wethers would have sold better in the store pens, where there has been a good steady level throughout the season. Fatteners with feed perhaps rightly judge that wether mutton will not be in over-supply for the local winter trade. FAT CATTLE

This was the old story of too many cattle with a corresponding drop in prices. There was a fair number of light steers and old cows, and these were down by a good 15s a head., Good prime heifers also sold disappointingly, but prime medium-weight steer beef was wanted at only a slight decline. Judging by the size of the entries when the market is firm there are plenty of beef cattle round—that is. if some of the class forward can be- describedJba this term. -

ing sheep made exceptionally good prices, whilst the serviceable types sold with fair freedom, but again the poorer quality, of which there was a fair showing, were passed at flock ram values. A record was also achieved in this section, H. J. Andrew (Maheno) selling one at 132Jgns, a second at 85gns, and a third at 71gns, with several others ranging between 37gns and 47gns. The Maheno breeder’s average was the best secured for Southdowns on record. Top price last fair was 92Jgns. The passings yesterday were mostly of the lower priced rams. English Leicesters attracted only moderate competition and passings, particularly in the earlier stages, were heavy. R. J. Low (Methven) topped the market with a ram at 42gns, and another made 40gns, a figure also secured by Jas. Reid (Barfield). There was a fair number of sales at from 15gns to 25gns. In proportion the passings in the Leicester section were the heaviest of all the breeds. There was only one passing in the small entry of Romneys. This breed met with lively competition. Top price was 46gns, for a ram sold by A. S. Elworthy (Timaru). another from Jas. Campbell (Wyndham) making 40gns, and a third from W. Rayner (Masterton) 35gns. The few Border Leicesters sold well at from 27gns to 28gns, one being passed at 35gns, Colonel Findlay securing the top price:— Range of Values

Values compared with those of last fair were as follows; — 1937. 1938. gns. gns. gns. gns.
