FIRES

garage destroyed at SUMNER

A fire, involving the destruction of a garage and a car standing in it, occurred at the residence of Mr A. W. Cousens, Grafton street, Sumner, shortly after 4 o’clock on Thursday morning. The noise of the burning timber of the garage awakened Miss Cousens when the blaze had a good hold. The Sumner Volunteer Fire Brigade was summoned and they soon had the flames under control as well as safeguarding the house nearby. The car, which was badly damaged, is insured with the South Island Motor Union. The origin of the fire is unknown. The car had not been in use for two or three days and had been securely locked in the garage.
