CORONATION LAMPS LIGHTED

MAYOR PERFORMS CEREMONY

A principal part of the city s commemoration of the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, the handsome lamps set up round the Cathedral grounds, were lighted officially last evening by the Mayor ox Christchurch, Mr J. W. Beanland. With Mr Beanland and councillors at the ceremony were Bishop West-Watson, ■Dean Julius, other Cathedral reprer sentatives, and citizens. Mr Beanland said that for some considerable time the lighting of the Square had been' a problem for the council. These handsome new lamps would therefore serve a double purpose in that they would commemorate in a most fitting manner the city s loyal interest in the coronation and enhance the beauty of the Square. Bishop West-Watson said that the Cathedral Chapter had been happy to co-operate with the council in haying the lamps erected. He, too, praised them as things of both utility and beauty. . . , , The lamps were lighted by the Mayor, who pressed a button installed for the purpose.
