SUBSIDY ON ISLAND HILLS BRIDGE

WORK FOR THE MONTH

Work in progress in the county was reported on at the monthly meeting of the Amuri County Council. Members of the council present were Crs G. O. Rutherford (chairman), M. Bothell, J. Manson, J. J. Gallagher, J. J Duncan, H. R. Davison, R. L. Jameson, R. le Clerc Latter, and R. Mercer. The minutes of the special meeting held an January 7, 1938, at which resolutions were passed resolving to raise a loan of £6OO to extend and improve the Waiau Plains water race headworks, and appointing the Public Trustee as the sinking fund commissioner and making a special security rate of 43/500ths of a penny in the £1 over the Waiau Plains water race area, were confirmed. It was decided to install a culvert across the main highway in front of the Rotherham Hotel. The chairman reported that the Minister for Public Works had agreed to provide a £3 for £1 subsidy on the construction of the Island Hills bridge. Letters were received from the Public Wdrks Department about the design of the bridge. The engineer was instructed to submit a plan for approval. The Department of Agriculture wrote about the plant known as blue borage, and asked the council to consider having it declared a noxious weed in the county. On the motion of the chairman, it was resolved that the council could not declare blue borage a noxious weed. Works and Tenders The secretary of the Culverden Domain Board wrote asking the council to consider completing the parking place for cars adjoining the domain. It was decided to carry out the work.

Mr D. W. Davison waited on the council and asked that the Balmoral water race flumes be attended to without delay, and suggested that a loan not exceeding £IOOO be raised. It was decided to make an inspection with the ratepayers concerned. The following tenders were accepted: Tekoa Cutting, Mr W. D. Jelfs; painting office and foreman’s house, Culverden, H. Brydon; horse-drawn grader, St. Helens station; metalling Iverach’s road, Messrs Hadfleld Bros.; metalling Johns’ road and Balmoral Station road, Mr W. D. Jelfs; sealing Hanmer Springs, Waiau, and Rotherham townships, Messrs C. B. Brown and Company. The County Engineer (Mr R. B. Cotton) reported that during the month specifications for the workmen’s houses and for the metalling of the Whalesback section of the Hurunui-Conway highway had been completed, and plans for Fleming’s, Armstrong’s, and Dog Creek culverts had been made.

RAINFALL AT RANGIORA

Heavy rain fell at Rangiora yesterday morning, 27 points being recorded over a short period. Earlier in the week readings taken at the Rangiora High School showed a rainfall of 50 points.

KAIAPOI BASKETBALL CLUB

Fourteen new members were elected at the annual meeting of the Kaiapoi Basketball Club on Thursday evening. The vice-president (Mr J. W. A. McDougall) presided. The annual report reviewed a successful season, members having taken a keen interest in the inter-club competitions. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £l7 2s. Officers were elected as follows: — Patron, Mr C. Morgan Williams, M.P.; president, Mrs A, Pearce; vice-presi-dents, -Mesdames J. Simpson and J. McDougall, Messrs D. Innes, H. C. Watson, J. W. A. McDougall, E. Gray, P. Hunt, and Dr. M. H. Aiken; club captain. Miss V. Hutson; vice-captain. Miss D. Thompson; secretary and treasurer, Miss B. Dixon; assistant secretary-treasurer. Miss I. Hill; committee, Misses R. Innes, J. Hutson, O. Pearce, J. Batie, C. Thompson, and F. Miles; auditor, Mr J. W. A. McDougall; trustees, Miss B. Dixon and Mr J. W. A. McDougall: delegates to the association, Misses V. Hutson and B. Dixon; coaches, Misses Gregory and White. , . . . It was decided to make inquiries about the renting of a practice room. The assistant-secretary and the vice-captain were appointed a subcommittee to purchase new equipment Opening "day was fixed for April 2.

KAIAPOI WRESTLING

CLUB

FIRST ANNUAL MEETING

“That members have taken up the sport enthusiastically is * shown by the club’s success in gaming second Diace in the centre shield competition, said the president (Mr E. Morris) at the first annual meeting of the Kaiapoi Amateur Wrestling Club on Thursday evening. . The annual report showed that the club had a credit balance of £6 5s 6d after the initial expenditure on equipment. The club members had received instruction from Messrs Dukes and Wilson, of the Christchurch Centre, and had held tournaments with the Papanui Club. The cups given by the centre for the most improved wrestlers in the club had been awarded to J. Capill and J. Coup. The election of officers resulted: — President, Mr E. Morris; vice-president, Mr L, Holbrough; secretary and treasurer, Mr W. D. Gordon: committee, Messrs R. Rollinson, I. Shaw, J. Coup, A. Morris, K. Todd, D. Neale, R. Harper, and A. Green; club instructor, Mr I. Shaw.

The president was asked to interview the executive committee of the Oddfellows’ Lodge about arrangements for renting the old Oddfellows’ Hall for six months for a practice room. It was decided to hold classes of instruction in wrestling and boxing two evenings a week.

GLENMARK MINIATURE RIFLES

The annual meeting of the Glenmark Miniature Rifle Club was held in the Waipara Hall recently, when Mr F, Gainsford presided. It was decided to ooen the season to-day. Officers for the year were elected as follows: —Patron. Mr W. Mclntosh; president, Mr J. Harris; vice-presi-dents, Messrs L. Doak and P. Gainsford; secretary, Mr P, Carpenter; assistant secretary, Mr A, Aydon; captains, Messrs H, Grant (also coach), G. Williams, E. J. Whyte; handicappers and selectors, Messrs F. Quigley, L. Doak, H. Grant, G. Williams; official checkers, Messrs L. Doak, E. P. King; delegates to North Canterbury Association, Messrs J. Harris and F. Gainsford; custodians, Messrs M. Gainsford and E. J. Whyte; range officers, Messrs A. Reeves and H. Symonds; auditor, Mr H, Grant. ' *
