WRESTLING
FIVE NEW CLUBS IN CANTERBURY
ASSOCIATION’S SUCCESSFUL YEAR
“The committee spared no effort to encourage amateur wrestling in Canterbury, and last season was the most important one in its-history, new clubs having been formed at Kaiapoi, Papanui, Woolston, Lyttelton, and New Brighton,” stated the report presented to the annual, meeting of the Canterbury Wrestling Association. The president (Mr A. P. Craig) presided. The report said that 18 professional matches had been staged during the season, and amateur matches had been staged as preliminaries to all the professional bouts. For the first time, a team of amateur wrestlers left New Zealand to compete at the British Empire Games held in Sydney recently. A great honour was done to the wheg, the ..Dominion Wrestling Union appointed the association’s president (Mr Craig) trainer of the New Zealand team, in which Canterbury was represented by J. F. Genet. Prospects for the coming season were particularly satisfactory, added the report. Arrangements had been made for the visit of some first-class wrestlers, including
Billy Hausen. Rudy Laditzi, Pat Meehan, and Joe Tbnti. The first team would arrive before the end of the month. The following officers were elected:— Patron. Mr P. R. Ciimie; president, Mr R. E. Booker; vice-president. Mr D. Rennie; secretary, Mr C. E. Wilkins; honorary treasurer, Mr A. E. Talbot; honorary solicitor, Mr R. E. Booker; honorary auditor, Mr P. N. Quartermain; committee, Messrs A. L. Gray, W. J. Loader, J. B. Gott, G. C. Osbom, and A. W. norland. Thanking members for his election, Mr Booker referred to the services given to the association by Mr Craig. No one had done more for amateur wrestling, said Mr Booker, but unfortunately he was no longer eligible to serve on the management committee, because the Olympic ana British Games rules required that every person taking office on the governing body of an affiliated association should sign a certificate that he was an amateur as defined in the Olympic rules. Mr Booker said that the position was most unfortunate, but he felt sure that Mr Craig would continue to take an active interest in amateur wrestling and would willingly give assistance and advice when required.
