OFFICIAL FORECASTS

WELLINGTON, March 18. The weather forecast for Canterbury and Marlborough, at 5 P-m by the Meteorological Office, Wellington, and dealing with the 24 hours foll?w----ing the time of issue, is as follows.

Winds light to moderate and variable, with southerlies in places at first, but north-easterlies or neither lies again setting m Saturday. Weather for the most part fair to cloudy, but _ with occasional showers or drizzlim, rain in many places. Temperatures still mild. Seas rather rough at times north of Kaikoura; elsewhere slight to moderate.

WEST COAST The forecast for the West Coast of the South Island is.-

Winds variable, with light to moderate northerlies predominating and later again freshening somewhat. Weather cloudy to overcast, with rain at times. Temperatures mild. Seas moderate.

DOMINION The Dominion forecast is:—

Weather changeable and with rain at times in most districts; scattered and for the most part light in eastern districts, but heavier and more general in western districts from Taranaki southwards. Temperatures still mild. The recent anti-cyclone is moving away eastward, and a very slight low pressure disturbance is now crossing the Dominion. Pressure remains rather low, however, over the Tasman.

Winds—Variable at first over the South Island, with southerlies m places, but northerlies to north-wester-lies generally predominating and later again freshening. ~ . , Seas (New Zealand waters)— Mainly slight to moderate, but rather rough to rough about Cook and Foveaux Straits at times. , Eas'orn Tasman Sea —Moderate to strong northerly winds prevailing, with moderate to rather rough seas.

CHRISTCHURCH WEATHER

After a short but fairly heavy fall of rain early yesterday morning, the day in Christchurch was fine. The weather was mild, the sky being • cloudy, with only a light wind and warm temperatures. The maximum temperature was 72.1 degrees.

At 1 o’clock this morning it was raining and a light south-westerly wind was blowing. The temperature was 60 degrees, and the barometer, at 30.22 inches, was rising steadily.

Auckland—The weather was fine but overcast, with a moderate to fresh northerly wind. The maximum tentperature was 77 degrees. The barometer was high and fairly steady, the 5 p.m. reading being 30.30 in.

Wellington—lt was overcast and raining in the morning, with a strong north-westerly wind, reaching gale force. In the afternoon there was a general improvement, with the sun shining at brief intervals. The minimum temperature on Thursday was 63.0 degrees, and the maximum yesterday 64.6. At .3.30 p.m. the barometer registered '30.174 inches. Dunedin —The weather yesterday was fine and warm, with a slight breeze from the south-east. The maximum temperature was 72 degrees. Late in the afternoon a heavy bank of fog appeared on the hills and quickly spread over the whole of the city. The barometer, after falling in the morning, rose sharply later and read 30.20 inches early last evening.*
