MANY APPLICATIONS FOR OFFICES
(PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.)
AUCKLAND, March 18
The Minister for Internal Affairs (the Hon. W. E. Parry), who is at present recovering from a slight operation, hopes that in a few days’ time he will be able to make arrangements for the appointment of an adviser and council under the Physical Welfare and Recreation Act.
The legislation provides that the council shall consist of the Minister, the Under-Secretary for Internal Affairs, the Director-General of Health, the Director of Education, a person to be appointed by the Minister for Defence to represent the naval, military, and air forces of New Zealand, and not more than 10 other persons to be appointed by the Minister, and to hold office during his pleasure. The general function of the council shall be to advise the Government on matters relating to the maintenance and improvement of the physical well-being of the people by means of physical training, exercise, sport, and recreation and social activities related thereto, and to make all the necessary inquiries. Among its particular functions is the directing of the public interest to the national value of physical welfare and recreation, and to disseminate knowledge and information and advice on it.
Mr Parry said to-night, that the popularity of the legislation, together with the desire of sports bodies to assist, was responsible for many applications for the offices to be filled.
