NEW ZEALAND AIRMAN’S DEATH

DETAILS OF ACCIDENT IN ENGLAND • ITHK PRESS Special Service.] -f TEMUKA, March 18. Details of the aeroplane accident in which Pilot Officer M. V. Baxter lost his life on February 22 were received by his father. Mr I. W. T. Baxter (Temuka) to-day. A letter which came by air mail from Group Captain K. R. Park, of No. 1 (Fighter) Squadron at Tangmere, Sussex, said that Pilot Officer Baxter was flying in formation above the downs that lie north of Brighton when, for some reason not yet known, he broke away from the formation and glided down, as if to make a landing. When very close to the ground his aeroplane struck a high tension cable and dived into the ground. With normal visibility this obstacle would have been seen and avoided, the letter said, but the weather at the time was dull.

The funeral took place with full military honours, at Tangmere, and was attended by the band of the Royal Air Force. Pilot Officer Baxter was the fifth son of the family, and was educated at Temuka, where he lived until he went to England two years ago. ■
