GRILL AT LAKE TO REMAIN
EFFECT ON FISHING DISCUSSION PREVIOUS DECISION RESCINDED The decision to remove the grill from Lake Alexandrina made at a pre- ., *" : ous meeting was reversed by the ,-ftouncil of the South Canterbury Ac- ' climatisation Society last night. The chairman. Mr J. McDonald, said that although the council had decided on the removal, action had been deferred. The curator, Mr F. W. Pellett. considered a mistake would be made if the grill were removed, and this was also his opinion. On behalf of a deputation, Mr J. Morrison said he had been fishing steadily in the lake for about 12 years, and therefore understood conditions there. During the first six or seven years he had gone there it had been unusual to land fish less than four or «ve pounds; to-day it was possible to catch many more smaller fish. He considered this was entirely through the erection of the grill. He could not agree that the presence of the grill was responsible for raising the lake level in the slightest degrre. This had «*en caused by Scott's creek carrying a lot of water. Another member of the deputation sa id that since the grill had been erected the number of small fish in the lake had increased. A letter was read from Mr S. expressing surprise that the council had decided to remove the snil. To do so would, he considered, allow young fish to escape. *;After the deputation had withdrawn ***" H. Washer moved that the previous
resolution be rescinded, thus allowing the grill to remain. This was seconded by Mr R. MacLeod. Mr J. H. Smillie suggested that before taking action a groyne, should be erected in the lake. Mr McGregor's motion was carried. ' . , It was decided to inform owners of huts at the Rangitata reserve that no complaints of sheep straying on their properties would be considered unless fences were erected. It was decided that the. Department of Internal Affairs be requested to fix an open season for opossums, the same as last year. Applications for ova from the Grey and Wellington societies were declined. The report of the curator stated that a bridge for cars had ben built at the top end of Lake Alexandrina over Scott's creek, giving access to huts there.
