WORKER
A farewell social was held in the Methodist Bible Class rooms on Saturday evening, in honour of Mr H. M. ronton who has been actively assogated with the Methodist Church in Eangiora for the last two years. During the evening reference was made by the minister (the Rev. H. Ryan) to Mr Denton's contribution to the spiritual and social life of the church, and he expressed deep regret at Mr Denton's departure. Mr FA. Lane also spoke, and on behalf of the youth workers and choir members he presented Mr Denton with an oak chiming clock. Mr Denton replied, saying that the two years he had spent at Rangiora bad been helpful and pleasant ones. There was a oiogramme of games and and items were contributed by Mrs E. C. Horsley, Mrs R. H. Ellis, Miss E. Hamilton, Miss M Stanton, and Messrs R. S. and L Thwaites. The evening concluded with supper.
HORORATA SCHOOL
COMMITTEE
Mr A. J. Harris presided at a meeting of the Hororata School Committee. The' headmaster (Mr E. Mauger) reported that the roll number was 57. The holding of the annual picnic (which was postponed in December because of wet weather) was discussed and it was decided to hold the picnic and sports for the children in the Darfield Domain on Saturday, March 19. and to adjourn in the afternoon to the Darfleld picture theatre. The dental clinic was discussed, and it was decided to send circulars through the district to raise the necessary money for the Hororata quota. It was stated that the school house was being painted and renovated, and some improvements carried out in the school. Mr A. J. Harris, who has left tht> district, has resigned from the position of chairman, and Mr W. R. Oliver was appointed acting-chairman until the householders' meeting in April Lawn Tennis The following are results of play on the . Derrett, "Mill Farm," Hororata. HARVEST FESTIVAL THANKSGIVING SERVICE AT MARSHLAND The Marshland Methodist Church celebrated the annual harvest thanksgiving service on 'Sunday morning, when the Rev. J. C. Draper preached an appropriate sermon and also gave an address to the children. The church had been decorated with corn, fruit, vegetables, and flowers, which will be given to the Methodist Orphanage in Papanui. Sunday School Picnics
The Methodist Sunday School picnic was held at the Pines on Saturday, when a very happy time was spent by the children and adults. After lunch and bathing, races were run oft*. The annual picnic of St. Mark's Sunday School was held on Saturday at Spencer Park, when a happy time was spent. Races and competitions were contested and Sunday school prizes were presented.
RAINFALL FIGURES FOR KIMBERLEY
During February rain fell on seven days at Kimberley for a total of i.41 inches, compared with 3.04 inches and 12 days for the same month last year, and 7.52 inches in 1936. The heaviest falls were on February 11 and 19, with 38 points on each day. The total rainfall for the two months ended February 28 was 5.13 inches, against 5.64 inches for the corresponding period last year. For February over the last six years the average rainfall is 2.895 inches. Personal Miss S. McCausland, "Tyrone Farm," Kimberley, is spending a holiday at Hanmer Springs. RAINFALL AT LITTLE RIVER The rainfall for February as recorded by Mr D. Richards (Little River) was 1.92 inches. The highest daily fall was .98 inches on February 4. Ram fell on six days. The total rainfall for 1938 until February 28 was 5.30 inches, and for the same period last year was 7.51 inches. The rainfall for February, 1937. was 3.82 inches. The February rainfall for Puaha, as recorded by Mr J. C. Harty, was 1.75 inches. The maximum fall was .77 inches on February 4. Rain fell on seven days. The total rainfall to date is 5.25 inches, artd the fall for February, 1937, was 3.26 inches. DUNSANDEL RAINFALL The rainfall at Dunsa'ndel for February, as shown by Mr C. A. Wright's gauge, was 1.29 inches, as compared with 2.91 for the same month last year. Rain fell on five days. The total fall 1 for the first two months of the year was 5.52 inches, whereas the total fall for the same two months of last year was 5.91 inches. DANCE AT PARNASSUS A hard-up dance was held In the Parnassus Social Hall recently, in aid of the Parnassus Queen Carnival fund. Music for dancing was played by the Waiau Dane? CRICKET BANKS PENINSULA COMPETITION WAINUI V. AKAROA Akaroa beat Wainui by 17 runs on the first innings at Wainui on Saturday. Wainui batted first, making 95 runs, the chief scorers being H. Rankin 32, T. Warren and E. Mulcock 15, L. Wright 13. Akaroa replied with 112, the highest scorers being O. Eves and T. Masefield 21, J. Masefield 14. and W. Newton 12, not out. TAKAHANGA TENNIS CLUB FAREWELL GATHERING An afternoon gathering was held last Saturday, on the Takahanga ' tennis courts, to bid farewell to Mr Shannon, a past president of the tennis club, who is leaving for Christchurch. A tournament was held. M. Comer and Miss K. Ferry being the winners. Mr J. Johnston, a past president, and the secretary, Mr T. Drabble, wished Mr and Mrs Shannon success in Christchurch. In the men's singles championship competition for the Morris Cup, McLachlan beat C. Stewart. 6-5, 6-3. WOMEN'S DIVISION OF FARMERS' UNION LYNDON-WAIAU BRANCH The March meeting of the Lyndon - Waiau branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union was held in the Sunday School, with Mrs White presiding over a good attendance of members. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs Savage in her bereavement, and to Mrs J. McKie in her illness. It was decided to hold the annual meeting in April. Mesdames Jelfs and Johnson acted as stewards for the competitions, the results being as follows:—Plate of pikelets: Mrs White 1. Mrs' Jelfs 2, Mrs O'Malley 3. Vase of flowers or foliage: Mrs V. Oldman 1, Miss F. Beaven 2, Mrs O'Malley 3. The hostesses were Mrs .Derrett and Miss Anderson, assisted by the junior members. HAREWOOD The Harewood branch of the Women's Division of the New Zealand Farmers' Union.held its annual picnic at the Botanic Gardens, and entertained visiting branches amid beautiful surroundings and in perfect weather. A sports programme was held.
The monthly meeting of the Harewood branch of the Women's Division: of the Farmers' Union was held in the Highsted Road Hall. Mrs N. A. Fraser presided Motions of sympathy in their bereavements were passed to Mrs Sisso.'), Mr' and Mrs McArthur, Mr and Mrs Morwood, and Mr and Mrs Blakemore. Members were reminded that the mterprovincial conference would be held at Ashburton on March 29, and the annual meeting of the branch in April. Mrs Radford (Papanui) gave an interesting talk on "Show Cooking," and judged the cooking competitions, explaining her reasons for the awards made. Competition results were:—Pikelets, Mrs G. Montgomery 1, Mrs W. Webb 2: Christmas cake, Mrs Collison 1; vase of Hewers, Mrs W. Evans 1, Mrs A. C. Orchard 2; single bloom, Mrs W. Evans 1, Mesdames F. Claridge and A. C. Orchard (equal) 2. Members took the opportunity to say good-bye to Mrs W. Hayton, who will leave shortly for Australia. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Hayton, Hawker, and Lynn.
WOMEN'S INSTITUTES
MAIREHAU The annual meeting of the Mairehau Women's Institute was held, with Mrs Waugh presiding. The secretary, .Mrs Judd, read the annual report, which showed that the year had been a full one and that interest was well maintained. Reference Was made to the death of Mrs J. R. Walter, vice-presi-dent since the inception of the institute. The librarian, Mrs Aston, gave a full account of the library. The election of officers resulted:— Committee, Mesdames Baker, McGill, Beck, Brosnan, Callaway, Judd, McCree, Shelley, Sturgiss, Waugh, Webster, and Miss Emmett. Mesdames Sturgess and McGill were appointed delegates to the North Canterbury Federation conference. Mrs Waugh was appointed delegate to the biennial conference in Wellington in July. Mesdames Pritchard, McFadden, and Good judged the competitions as follows:—Apple jelly, Miss Emmett 1, Mrs Olds 2, Mesdames Bean and Collins (equal) 3; best bloom, Mrs Olds Michaelis (hydrangea) 3. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses. Mesdames Young, Barraclough, Mahan, Webster, and Bean. KAIKOURA The Kaikoura Women's Institute held its annual meeting recently in St. Paul's schoolroom. Mrs N. R. Comer presided. A welcome was extended to Mesdames Lennie, Conway, and Wilson, who are visiting Kaikoura.
Mrs Comer referred to the departure from the district of Mrs Shannon, who had been a very energetic member of the institute. Mrs Shannon was presented with a silver jam spoon with the institute's monogram engraved on it. A silver spoon was also presented to Mrs Collins, to be forwarded to Mrs E. J. Anstiss. Mrs H. Storer won the marble cake competition; Mrs A. Turner won the flower display with three asters; the sewing competition was won by Mrs Storer. The following were the winners of the greatest number of points during the year:—Most entries: Mrs H. Storer 1, Mrs H. Rainey 2. Sewing: Mrs W. A. Ferry 1, Mrs H. Rainey 2. Cooking: Mrs H. Adair and T. Boyd; link correspondent, Mrs Corney; patterns, Mrs R. T. Pope; homo and country journal, Mrs H. Storer; reporter, Mrs A. B. Clark; committee, Mesdames K. K. Campbell, A. Collins, R. Mahoney, E. H. Morris, and J. P. Smith. Mrs A. B. Clark presented Mesdames Comer, Shannon, and Morris, retiring officers, with a piece of crystal in recognition of their services. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames T. Alexander, J. C. Smith. L. D. McLachlan, Andrew Stewart, E. H. Workman, and R. L. Withers. DANCE AT CHEVIOT A dance was held in the Cheviot Town Hall recently, in aid of the
Claverley Queen Carnival fund. There was a good attendance, and the fund will benefit considerably from the proceeds. Music for dancing ■was played by Mrs H. Tomison and Mr COgden. -Supper was served by the ladies' committee.
