SMOKING IN NON-SMOKING COMPARTMENTS
TO TUB EDITOE OF TUB TRESS. Sir,—Being a fairly frequent traveller by train to and from the West Coast, I should like to call the attention of the railway authorities to the smoking by both men and women in the non-smoking second-class carriages, greatly to the annoyance of nonsmokers. I do not wish to blame the guards, who I know have plenty to do, but hope they will exercise more diligence, and remove those offenders to the place where they belong.—-Yours, etc., PASSENGER. March 1, 1938. [When the letter was referred to Mr E. S. Brittenden, District Traffic Manager, he replied; "Guards have instructions to take the necessary steps ♦o avoid such annoyance to passengers. Frequently, however, the passengers do not smoke while the guards are in the carriages, and those who are offended should draw the guards' attention to the smoking and the necessary steps would then be taken."]
