MIDLAND LINE BRIDGES

STRENGTHENING WORK WELL ADVANCED MORE POWERFUL LOCOMOTIVES TO BE USED Work on the strengthening of the bridges on the Midland railway line has so far advanced that the G type of locomotives, which now run only as- far as Springfield, will soon replace the AB engines on the Spring-field-Arthur's Pass saction. Later, they will be replaced by the powerful K class of locpmotves, the construction of which has been authorised. The strengthening of the big Kbwhai viaduct has been completed and a number .of bridges beyond Avoca is now being renewed. The K class lomomotives will be fitted with boosters, which alone will give a greater traction effort than that possessed by the first engine to ..lake the journey on the Main South line from Christchurch to Dunedin. These boosters will' operate automatically, cutting in When the locomotives are working on the heavy hill gradients. With the advent of the K engines, the loading of goods trains on ths Midland route will be increased by 100 per cent., it is expected. The locomotives will be more powerful than those operating on the North Island lines.
