Treaty of Friendship A message from Ankara, Turkey, states that Turkey and Greece have signed a treaty of friendship for a period of 10 years. They will consult each other on all matters of mutual interest in order to ensure a common policy in international matters. A communique issued at the close of a conference of the Balkan Entente States — Greece, Jugoslavia, Rumania, and Turkey—announces a decision to recognise the Italian conquest of Abyssinia. These countries will now send their diplomatic representatives to the Italian King and Emperor. The Entente hopes that Italy will adhere to the Montreux Agreement about the Dardanelles. The communique proclaims fidelity to the League of Nations and a decision to continue co-operation with England, France, -and Italy to assure peace in the Mediterranean. Scottish Universities' Seat Sir John Anderson (Government candidate), a former Governor of Bengal, won the Scottish Universities' by-election caused by the death of Mr Ramsay Mac Donald. Sir John Anderson secured a majority of 8424 votes over his opponents. There was no Labour candidate. A General Apologises General Matsui, the former Japanese Com-mander-in-Chief, who was recalled, has revealed that he apologised profoundly to the Emperor for having caused many casualties. Famous Pictures Sold At a sale of pictures which realised £22,395 at Christie's, London, special interest was shown in a portrait by Rembrandt of his father, painted when Rembrandt was about 23 years old. In 1877 the picture was sold for £ 100, and last Saturday it was purchased by Sir Edward Mountain for £7350. A Goya portrait sold for 800 guineas and two Corots for 600 guineas and 460 guineas respectively. Van Rijn Rembrandt was one of the greatest of Dutch painters; he lived from 1607 to 1669.
